Basic STAR question
OK I am wayyyyyyyy confused
we bought our house april 2007. I applied for BASIS STAR
I got a letter that says we are approved and it will be reflected in our taxes
our taxes seem to still be under the old lady that was here
so now the bank sent us back money b/c they think our taxes are lower. I still have all that money and Iam just waiting for them to ask for it back
Now I think today OCT 1st they update the taxes
I cannot get mynassauproperty to work it looks all new
But now I hear about a star rebate....is this different from the STAR
It says something about getting a star number and stuff
all my lettr stated was that we were approved and it will be reflected in our tax statement thingy
So am I going to get a rebate???
PLEASE HELLLLLLLP I am stuck in taxland and i dont understand ANY OF IT

Re: Basic STAR question
The STAR exemption, which I believe is what you applied for, is automatically taken off your taxes, no rebate. From time to time they do a rebate, which you have to apply for, and you would get a letter about that.
With the exemption, for the first year you get the exemptions of the previous owner. If they were a senior, or a veteran, they will be significantly lower and should have automatically risen to your regular exemption after the year was up. I'd call the town and check into it, good thing you held onto the money.
Sometimes mynassauproperty gets messed up for me too. What I find works is clearing my computer's cache and cookies.

Re: Basic STAR question
What town do you live in?
Most likely, since you bought in April - you missed the deadline (which is generally March). The previous owner's STAR rolls forward until the following deadline which is why your taxes still seem low.
You actually made out buying in April - even though you owned the house for 11 months of the deadline, you got the better tax exemption.

Re: Basic STAR question
Because you bought in April your star application will not become effective until this tax year. Although the taxes are due Oct 1, it is more likely then not that you willl not receive your tax bill for another 2 weeks and mynassauproperties may not be updated correctly. Your taxes should go up to the correct exemption with this bill coming out.
As for the Star rebate that people are getting you will get one this year. We moved into our house in April 2006 and didn't get one in 2006 but received one last year.

Yes! I have to apply for it as well because we closed in September 2007. The state is supposed to send us the application next week for us to fill out and return.

I was confused too last year. I thought we just had a reduction on our income taxes - I was surprised there was a rebate as well.
Since you moved in in 2007, you should be eligible this year.
You will receive something in the mail that outlines the steps you need to take (it's a few easy questions online and they pull your income info directly from your NY state tax return).
