Bed situation, not sure what to do...

So DS still has a drop side crib. We haven't had any issues, but I would like to switch to a safer option. At this point, DS is 3.5, doesn't walk (by himself) or really crawl, can roll around and army crawl a little (but tends not to do either in bed). He can't pull himself up yet. He's only 25 lbs at this point (small for his age) and is 34" tall.

WWYD? Would you get another crib for a while, a twin bed with side rails, a special bed, or something else? We can't get anything too big because space is an issue.

Who would I even ask about this? I'm waiting for a call back from DS's PT, but figured I'd see what you all think. TIA!Chat Icon

We have a twin bed with long rails on both sides.

I would do a twin at this point or get a toddler bed.

I usually think a toddler bed is a waste of $$ but in your case it's much lower to the ground if he were to fall and would make the most sense.

We also did not do a regular box spring under the mattress. We did a bunkie board. It's only about 2 inches tall vs a spring mattress which would make a twin bed way too tall for young children.

Does your crib become a daybed? We did that for a while when our crib was recalled. The drop side was removable to convert to a day bed. And I had a rail too.

can you call the manufacturer to get the kit that some of them were providing to make the sides stay in place?

Thanks SophieChat Icon I put a call in to the place we bought his crib. They're going to call me back with info. i can't remember if it turns into a toddler bed or not. That sounds like a good option if it does, though. I've always thought of toddler beds as a waste of money, too, but I'll keep it in mind as a last resort. If we can't convert his crib, I will definitely look into a twin next with a bunkie. I've never heard of that, but it sounds like a great option.

ThanksChat Icon I think the latest in the news was that even that's not safe to do with a drop side.

I would probably either get a toddler bed or a really low twin with full side rails.

We have a toddler bed that we don't need anymore. You can have ours if you choose to go with that option.

Re: Bed situation, not sure what to do...

We went to a full sized bed with a low profile boxspring (only about 5" instead of the regular sized one) and it's on the floor, with bedrails. The head of the bed is perpendicular to the wall.

My DS is taller than yours, but we didn't think he was ready for the height of a regular bed, with boxspring and mattress. You could do the same thing with a twin, I think. We also spent the extra $$ on their stain protection mattress cover, which wasn't cheap, but my DS has already peed and had a bloody nose in the bed and the mattress is still pristine.

To me, unless your crib converts, it's a waste of money to get a toddler bed.

When I purchased DSs twin size bed from Raymore and Flanagan they had an option to get a low profile box spring. Also one step ahead sells extra long bed rails. I have them on my son's bed and love them. They go almost the entire length of the bed.

Ikea also sells a really low to the ground toddler bed. HTH

Depends on the repair kit. Ours was not just hardware to make the drop side fixed. We received 2 brand new side panels for both sides with new hardware.

I would definately get a toddler bed. A twin bed will be too big for him and he could use the toddler bed for the next year or so. We are just moving Sophia to a twin bed next month. She used her toddler bed for over a year. They aren't too much money and it was a super easy transition.
