Been here a little over a month and want to quit...

Do I have to give 2 weeks notice or can I just peace out? I HATE it here. I want something closer to my new home in NJ...the commute to NYC is killing me.

I would give two weeks notice, even though it's not "required" - but you shouldn't burn any bridges.

I would give it longer because I think I would need more than a month to like a job. There's the 2 week transition period where you don't know what you've gotten yourself into followed by the 2 week maybe I could deal with this.

On the other hnad, the commute isn't for everyone. I would give them 2 weeks too.

I would also give your job a few more weeks. If you are still miserable then, give 2 weeks notice.

Me too. Do you really need them as a reference? If not, just go. I've done it, I just didn't use them as a reference. Left a note on my computer and took off. No hard feelings actually, I spoke to people there after the fact.

Man..I would love to just leave a note on my computer and take off. I think the guilt would get to me though. Also, I think DH would kill me for being irresponsible. I wish I had another job lined up Chat Icon

to answer the orginal question, it depends. if you think you might them in the future (references), i would give the standard 2 week notice. if you are beyond fed-up and have no plans to deal w/ them in the future, then just tell them that things aren't what you expected and have decided to leave.

Re: Been here a little over a month and want to quit...

Yeah, the note thing was alittle lame. But I was miseable for 2 years. I was never allowed to take a vacation, so I taped this to my computer:

Au reviour, I'm leaving for my vacation to France. Since I was never allowed to take a vacation while working her, in lieu of giving you two weeks notice, I'm taking my vacation to France and not returning. I earned a damn vacaction and now I'm taking it.

Funny thing is people emailed me and really believed I was there. I would say oh yeah, today I hit the Lourve and blah, blah. But, I did have another job lined up, I just didn't leave with nothing.

I'd tell your supervisor that its not working out for you & see what he/she says.

They may not want you to stay for 2 weeks, if you haven't been there long enoguh to train your replacement or make a significant dent in your work.

We've had new people quit & they usually left that day.

ETA- even if you don't use then as a reference, you maye run into some of these people again if you stay in the same field.

Re: Been here a little over a month and want to quit...

y give 2 weeks notice when u have been there only 1 month--to me this is not burning a bridge to just leave--if its not workin out, its just not..no point sitting there for 2 weeks doing nothing if u truly hate it that much--plus u dont need a reference so what bridge could be burnt

Give 2 weeks!

I am not sure about how your business is but I in mine the same names pop up all over the place. The fact that its a "small world" is just scary.
