Before & After care

My son is going into Kindergarten in Sept. Our district offers before and after care via Scope. We are not thrilled with this option, but it is what it is as both me and DH work full time.

I put the word out in a local Facebook moms group to see if anyone knew anyone in the neighborhood who puts kids on the bus in the am (so we could possibly at least avoid before school care with Scope). One mom reached out that she does this (as well as get kids off the bus and watch them after school, on half days, vacations, etc.) so I sent her a message asking a ton of questions, one being what she charges. She said "pay what you can". Do you think it's reasonable, considering she said "pay what you can" to see if she would take my son before and after school for less than what I would be paying Scope? It would be at most 3 hours a day.

It's hard to say - how much does Scope cost?

She did say "pay what you can"...so why not offer less? If it doesn't work for her I'm sure she'll let you know.

My son does aftercare and loves it. He's going into 1st grade in Sept. It's really not a bad thing if you want to go that route vs home care.
He loves having that extra time with his friends. They have parties, play outside if the weather is nice & in the gym if it's not. They do crafts, homework, which for a f/t working parent it's a big help. Granted I still do the majority of it & check it, but every little bit helps!

I'm not totally against Scope. I like that he would be with friends and that he could get any homework done while he was there.

I just don't want to insult this woman by offering too little.

Can I ask why you are against SCOPE? When my DS first started school, I felt HORRIBLE putting him in after-care, I thought.....God, he is already at school for so long, he spends his entire day there and had guilt that he couldnt "go home" after-school. Fast forward years later, he LOVES LOVES LOVES Scope, and asks if I can put him in more days. He gets to hang out with all his friends and play which wouldnt otherwise happen on a school night. Plus, he has met SO many more kids in his school that he otherwise would not have and therefore has made quite the web of friends that expand beyond his classroom. These friends have been on Sports teams with him, they have been at Summer Camp with him. Places where he wouldnt have known anyone if it werent for SCOPE.

I'm not against it at all. I completely understand the benefits of it. And my kids are used to long days having been in daycare from the time they were babies from 8am-6pm. We just find it to be a little expensive and not as convenient as having someone in our neighborhood take him.

Re: Before & After care

3 hours a day, 5 days a week is 15 hours a week.
At $15/hour (which is what I pay for a babysitter) that's $225/week.
$10/hour which on the VERY low end of babysitting is $150/week.

I really don't think youi can offer someone who isn't a friend or neighbor less than that ....

ETA - I pay $600/month for my son's before/after care at his old daycare and he gets the bus to/from school at the daycare.
They also give him breakfast, and a snack (6:45 - 8:30 am) and (3:30 pm - 6pm)

I was thinking the same thing - I would pay at least $10 an hour.

I would go with the Scope program though personally - what happens if the person gets sick or goes away?

Re: Before & After care

I'm a single mom, I luckily have a flexible job where I can take my son to school, but I have him go to aftercare AND I have a babysitter pick him up because I can't make the 6pm pick up.

I pay $205 a month for aftercare and (roughly) $400 a month for my 18 year old babysitter. I pay her $20 a day (which is usually about $15/hr).

I love my sitter, but I would be so happy not to have to deal with the added expense and hassle of my sitter, aftercare is always there and they really are great.
