Best at-home non permanent hair color? UPDATED!
I'm thinking Natural Instincts. My mother is going to do it for me; I don't want anything with golden or red tones...I basically am tired of my grown-out highlights. I'm a little apprehensive, b/c I know my hair person is going to kill me next time she sees me! They never advise doing it at home! LOL...I think if I stick with a brown that's nice and shiny and the same as my root, I'll be all good. I'm thinking Nutmeg, Natural Instincts.
see my latest post; I did it!

they never advise to do it at home because when you realize how easy it is and cheap, you wont spend $50 on a single process when you can DIY for $8.
as long as you dont do anything drastic, and pick a shade close to your natural (or current) color, you should be ok.
to a test strand first!

Re: Best at-home non permanent hair color?
I used to use Natural Instincts and people always thought it was natual looking. A friend's sister who owns a hair salon said it's the best non permanent in her opinion. I just don't do it anymore b/c I'm lazy.

Thank you! Also, highlights are my security blanket. I'm trying to work on my self esteem and all that good stuff you're supposed to, to make yourself a better person and so, it's a good place to start.

Re: Best at-home non permanent hair color?
Just be careful b/c a lot of the time the color actually comes out darker than it looks on the box
signed,

ah! why, hon?
my friend did it and her hair looked exactly like she colored it out of a box- all one color. thne her hilights came through in a reddish color which did not look good.
i feel like the salon ususes better quality and that a trained professional can pick the right color.
also with the summer coming you may miss your hilights after you see others with them.
thne youll have to do a whole head again. as opposed to a few touch ups around the crown.
anyway, i wanted to give you that opinion so you can really think it over.
if you still decide to do it , then at least i said my piece
good luck and post pics if you do it though!!!

Thanks! Highlights coming through can happen, according to my stylist, but I'm thinking that might not be too bad. But what does scare me is the red you mention.....ugh!

Re: Best at-home non permanent hair color?
Lana, I just decided to do the same thing. My mom helped me do mine a couple weeks ago with Clairol Natural Instincts in Medium Warm Brown. Like you, I was sick of my highlights growing out and the constant upkeep. It did come out a little lighter than I had expected (maybe because the highlihts had gotten so light?), but I am happy with the color. Good luck! I'm sure it will look fine! I think going darker is easier than going lighter at home, and with a dark brown color unless your highlights were really light blonde I don't think you'll have reddish tones.

Re: Best at-home non permanent hair color?
Lana, dont do it PLEASE... I decided to lighten my hair a few weeks ago, and it was a mess. I should have just gone to my girl, it took 3 days to get it a normal color and now my hair is fried.

Re: Best at-home non permanent hair color?
if you don't want red coming through, maybe try and ash color...it usually cuts the red

yes, but it can also leave a greenish tint, be way careful when using ash

that is true although I use an ashy color and it doesn't (thank goodness!)

Maybe try going to Sally's and see what they suggest...
I always like the Wella products from there instead of pre-boxed colors

I was going to say the same thing. Go to your reular person and get a single process or even low lights to hide the roots from your highlights. I have been coloring my hair for about 15 years - a combo of doing it myself and getting it done. It ALWAYS looked better when I went somewhere.

Re: Best at-home non permanent hair color?
Okay, sorry, guys....I already did it! And it looks great! I used Clove, Medium Ash Brown; my mom told me ash negates red...so let's hope red doesn't appear in the weeks to come.
My 'lights were VERY blond, so "Clove" got me back to my root color (dark brown) but I can still see some highlight in the form of brown, which I think looks nice and natural. We'll see if it lightens up when I wash it tomorrow. Natural Instincts is dye free and not permament, but I'm pretty sure there's no way for the blond 'lights to return, so I guess I'm happy!
edit: if i did this at like 4--should i not wash my hair tomorrow morning?
