Best Holiday Gift Memory
Is there one holiday that stand out in your mind, where you wanted something really bad, were convinced you weren't getting it and were genuinely shocked and surprised when your parents/santa came through for you?
Would love to hear some stories

Re: Best Holiday Gift Memory
One was recently. DH and I had discussed getting engaged, but both agreed to wait it out at least 3-4 years until I was on better footing with a job, etc. Well, he surprised me all right. He proposed to me 2 weeks before Xmas 3 years ago and we've been in a blissful state since then!
As for a childhood memory. All of my brother's are much much older than I, so one year I didn't ask for anything on a major list - just that we could have one holiday where all 6 of us were in the same house, sharing dinner and laughs, and you know what, it happened!! I forget the year, but it was when I was in high school!

Re: Best Holiday Gift Memory
The only one that comes to memory is when Cabbage Patch dolls were really hot.
My mom couldn't find any in NY, but my grandfather was able to get one down in Florida. I don't remember the story exactly, but let's just say I'm glad it was 25 years ago and he didn't get shot over it!

OMG Beth I remember you telling the story about your friend telling you there was no Santa Claus and she still got the doll!
Like I said before - your grandfather should have given her coal!

Re: Best Holiday Gift Memory
It wasn't something that I wanted, necessarily, but I remember the exchange so vividly. My dad handed me this huge box - I was in 7th or 8th grade - the thing was so heavy. When he saw me struggle he said, Feels like the weight of the world.
It was a globe. Totally corny - but I will always remember it and his face.
Later he handed me a smaller box and it was one of those diamond initial rings that were so popular around that time. I was shocked - b/c I never even askd for it - it was the coolest.

Re: Best Holiday Gift Memory
Mine was a guitar. I couldn't play it, still can't...really never wanted to learn. But I was OBSESSED with Rick Springfield and had a poster of him (from my Teen Bop magazine) posing with a guitar. Thought I'd get myself one as well and take a picture of me with said guitar and mail it to his fan club.
Never mailed the picture and stopped playing with the guitar sometime in mid February of the same year.
But...it was a great holiday memory.
That and when I received my "Western Barbie" that winked.

A Pound Puppy. I had asked for one for 2 years and opened each gift on holidays, bdays, etc., praying it was a Pound Puppy!

Re: Best Holiday Gift Memory
The best one ever came from DH.
We has just gotten engaged and were in the process of working on the wedding budget/savings schedule and realized how incredibly BROKE we were going to be for our first Christmas together. So broke that we decided to skip getting gifts for eachother- we even decided to skip getting a tree and decorating our apartment. It was that bad.
I tried to remind myself that Christmas isn't about the tree, the lights, the wreaths, etc, but it just wasn't working. To top it off, DH had a final on my birthday (December 21st), of all nights AND I had to freaking work late. I was NOT looking forward to coming home to an empty apartment, no tree, no pine smell, no birthday cake, and worst of all, no holiday spirit.
I dragged my sad sack azz home from work, grumbling to myself like a Scrooge. I open my door and a pine smell hits me in the face-and Nat King Cole is singing the Christmas Song. I was thinking ***? I called out for DH and no one answers. I walk all the way in and see a twinkly glow coming from the living room, I have a TREE! A nice fluffy six foot tree, complete with lights and ornaments and a card sitting in the branches.
He'd taken a day off from work to set it all up for me.
I've never had a gift before or since, that touched my heart as much as that one.

it was too late- she had gotten hers for Hanukah already!
I still can't believe that her parents told her where it came from
it really bothers me- but then again these are the people who tried to force my Dad to lend them $60K a month after my Mom died- leaving messages on the answering machine that if my Mom was alive she would lend them the money! ( mean while her father passed away a year earlier leaving her over $200K that she spent)

Re: Best Holiday Gift Memory
One year when my brother and I were kids, my Dad made a treasure hunt for us. We would go to each spot and find another note that would bring you to another spot to find the next note. For my hunt, I just remember the last note said "Spell it backwards to find out where it WAS" and the word Was backwards is Saw. It was near his saw in the basement and it was a portable FM radio/cassette player I wanted (before the days of walkmans with headsets LOL) I thought that was very cool, I cant recall the notes but they were all poems, he was very creative like that.
