Best place to look for a blue collar job?
Electrical work, carpentry, etc. ? Where would you suggest looking for a job along these lines?

Unions.
these can be tough to get into. Plus, you have to complete an apprenticeship and a lot of other training before you make the going union rate.
A lot of private contractors though are probalby more flexible with who they hire/experience level etc. I see ads in the paper all the time.

DH has been looking for a guy for awhile. He's pretty much given up at this point though. It's amazing how UNRELIABLE people are who claim to need work.
His latest dictates when he is available (appears to be picking and choosing jobs through multiple contractors), then will call DH when it doesn't work out, since he has his # saved on his cell.
So I guess my long-winded response, is yes, try private contractors if you're serious though....
I also know NSLIJ tends to hire but I think you need to prove all types of certifications, have a resume and probably and inside contact as well. HR can also be an interesting phenomenon to deal with.....
