Baldwin is not that horrible ladies, Maybe not top 100, but it still is a nice town.
I heard the high school has a metal detector. In my opinion, any neighborhood that requires a metal detector in their high school is in trouble.
I teach at Baldwin High School- they do NOT have a metal detector. Its really a nice school. I teach regular and AP classes and we have a lot of students getting into top notch colleges.
I agree... I went to Baldwin schools my whole life and it is a good school.

Darn I just moved outta Baldwin. I LOVED where I lived but it was technically Baldwin Harbor, which is very small in comparison to ALL of Baldwin. Dh is a cop and MANY 911 calls are made from Baldwin, sorry
I'm sorry, but this is a silly statement. Every town has lots of 911 calls, since that's what everyone is trained to call for all medical emergencies, fire emergencies (including small kitchen fires), motor vehicle accidents, etc.
I worked across the street from the Vigilant Fire House in Great Neck and they went out on multiple calls a day, and I think that most people still consider Great Neck to be a desirable community.

Silly? Well if you call robbery, fights all the time at the Baldwin Bowling alley and car jacking typical calls in every town, I am shocked. On a scale I would say the first pct. receives a HIGH amount of THOSE calls.
911 calls for fires, aideds, and car stops are typical calls to every town but again N Baldwin receives a high amount of calls that are NOT typical LI calls. I loved Baldwin and just moved from there so I have NOTHING agaist the town but I know N Baldwin can get rough

I agree that those calls are more troubling, but you didn't share that information in your initial statement, you just said that there were a lot of 911 calls. I was pointing out that there are a vairety of reasons for 911 calls and that a high occurance of calls does not always mean it's an unsafe neighborhood. It could be an area with a lot of traffic so there are more accident related calls.

Re: Best Places to live 2007
former baldwinite here-parents are still there and i agree with pp it is not what it used to be. period. yes, there is a lot of crime.
however, i have heard from many people that baldwin is on the up b/c of its affordable housing and its proximity to nyc.

not a former Balwin girl, but I agree with groovypeg. My aunt has been a teacher at Baldwin HS for more than 25 years and she tells me it is not what it used to be.

Re: Best Places to live 2007
I don't believe that list at all!!
Baldwin...can't comment on that since I don't know the town at all but, i looked on their best places to live in ny and AMITYVILLE makes the list. Unless they are talking about the village which has no mention so it is entire amityville. And also WYNDANCH also makes the list and that town is worse than amityville as their good section is super tiny!!
what do they have to say about that? have they even ever visited these towns??

Interesting - Baldwin had practically the lowest crime rate of the top 100 towns. (ETA - as listed in the article)
And this list is about affordable housing mainly - so many of the nicer towns would be out based on median house price. Diversity was another factor in the decision, which also knocks out quite a few of the other towns.
We're buying a townhome there (and we made the offer before we knew of the ranking)... I'm fine buying a condo there, but I wouldn't have purchased a single family home. Not sure why I make that distinction in my head, but I feel that a condo can withstand a less desirable location than a single family home. I think it's a decent little town so fra from what I've seen, but I admit I was surprised at its ranking.
