Re: Best president ever
I was a history major in college and after reading a book on Harry Truman and since doing research on him, i think he was one of the best ever. This country should be grateful that he was the leader of this country at the end of WWII and the years afterwards. Before college I never really heard much about him.
I would also have to say Lincoln and Reagan would be my 2 and 3.

Re: Best president ever
FDR
Truman
Clinton
. . .and I agree that Nixon did a lot.
Regarding Reagan:
I think much of his greatness was in how he brought optimism back to this country.
While I disagree with pretty much everything Reagan did as president - I did/do have respect for him - Tip O'Neill was the speaker of the house during Reagan's administration. O'Neill was my grandfather's closest friend and would tell us stories about Reagan. While they were polar opposites in terms of politics, every day after work they would meet for a drink and friendly conversation. He said that Reagan was the most courteous person he had ever met and never engaged in slandering political opponents.
Sadly, I think politics and campaigning has become all about insults and very little is about nuanced discussion of the issues - and both democrats and republicans are to blame.

I just heard on one of the news channels- that Reagan was the last republican to try to unite the country around POSITIVE ISSUES
Bush has done nothing but try to divide this country - gay marriage, illegal immigration
I wish someone would step up and do something Postitive for once

In my lifetime - Clinton.
he is my favorite. I know people bash him, and im not saying what he did was right BUT he just got caught doing what most of them do......look at JFK and Marilyn Monroe
ditto, that was his only fault. he couldn't keep it in his pants but he did a lot for this country.
It wasn't his only fault. He also didn't respond to the mass genocide happening in Rwanda. The "best president ever" wouldn't ignore the slaughter of innocent people.

Re: Best president ever
Lincoln. He wasn't afraid to step up and do the right thing. Now it seems that politicians won't do the right thing in fear of losing the donations for the campaign, or for fear of losing their followers. It seems the right thing hasn't been done in a long time.

ETA: Just want to add that yes, we sh*t the bed on Rwanda, but the UN should have been dismantled after it!

Nothing. Nobody did a thing. Same as right now, I don't see troops marching into Darfur to stop the slaughter, or into Uganda. Just because other people were at fault doesn't mean he wasn't either.

I find that more than just a little disturbing considering the genocide that has happened there in the last decade. Where is everyone priority?

It breaks my heart. I can't believe that everyone can turn a blind eye to it. And i'm sorry to say, but I think the fact that this genocide is taking place in Africa is a big part of it. I'm sure if it happened in Europe again, people would be all over it.

Re: Best president ever
I am not sure he was the best ever, but, Bill Clinton is by far the best we have had in the last 30 years. I couldn't care less what his personal life was like and who he slept with. All I know is that the country was in far better shape when he was in office. I wish he could run again.
