Re: best school districts?
sachem is a decent one but I really don't think it would make top 5. I'm interested in seeing as a list too.

Depends on what you are looking for in a district....Sachem has a VERY reputable special education program, however the district is EXTREMELY large (I think the largest on LI) which might not be appealing to some people.
Also, are you looking in Nassau or Suffolk?

Re: best school districts?
This is a very popular topic on here. "Best" is a very personal idea. For some, it means the top football team so DC can get a college scholarship. For others, it means great special needs resources. For some, it means a small school so DC doesn't get lost in the crowd. For some, it means a large school, so there are more opportunities. Almost every district is "best" in something.....

as a teacher on LI, i hate these threads. and i will share that i work in one of the districts touted as being the "best"-- but there are other districts doing great things and some things that my district does wrong. no offense to the OP, as i understand her question. However, a lot of what people perceive as "great" schools are great, yes, but often they're just as good as the one that doesn't get any of the attention.
Long Island has the best public school systems in the nation---period. We just do. People get so caught up in the stupid things like, "I have to live in North Merrick, not Bellmore. Or I have to have a house in Harborfields, not Elwood, or I have to be in Rockville Centre, not Oceanside. " RIDICULOUS! I really think it's the tit-for-tat and keeping up with the Jones' that drives up our property taxes, not what you're actually getting. So many factors affect a child's education, not just the district you're in. Yes, it's a start, but like I said, LI has the best public schools around, so I think you're in pretty good shape wherever you are. You need to find a disrtict that is good at what is important to you as a parent. Are there a few districts on LI that I would absolutely not buy into, yes, but those are only about 5 dstricts out of 120. I think that's a great ratio!
And as a teacher, i wouldn't take those exam scores published in Newsday too seriously.... they don't tell the whole story...not by a long shot! I had a complete dyslexic NON-reader get a 4 on the test (4 is the highest score) because she matched the words she could find from the passage into the question and my child with a 70 IQ passes every year... you can pass the test, but not come close to actually functioning or mastering the material. But Newsday wants you to see who passed, but that's all they tell you.
Sorry...the teacher in me went on my soap box, but i hope you KWIM. there are many, many good districts on LI. don't feel like you have to lock yourself in to only one town or district...that's silly IMO.

Re: best school districts?
I dislike these threads too. It is such a personal issue and each person has their own strong opinion. I would never buy a house in some of the school districts that people here rave about but that is my personal preference. It's up to you to get out and do your own research. Be wary of Newsday. It's very anti-teacher and anti-school district.

I don't know anyone who would say Sachem performs the best academically, but they do have high-performing sports teams and an excellent special ed program. It is the largest on LI--maybe that's what you have heard? Check out the newsday ratings.
I don't think your resale value of your house would increase BECAUSE of being in Sachem. From what I've seen, it's not a district people search for like some others that are routinely ranked the top in Suffolk.
Something to keep in mind too--there is more than one HS in Sachem, and they are very different.

greatschools does NOT (IMO) even come close to telling you the truth about school districts. test scores don't mean much and are VERY deceiving. i worked in a not-so-good district and when i look up their scores i am amazed at how high they are. i'm also amazed at how little the percentage is of how many children receive free lunch, etc---it is not accurately represented AT ALL.
if you judge a district by test scores, you leave a lot to be learned. visit the schools, go to school board meetings and talk to parents in the area. that's the only true way to judge.

Re: best school districts?
I have to agree with the other teachers here! It's SO subjective! I actually worked in a district people on here desire, but to tell you the truth, I felt the staff was subpar to my colleagues in NYC when I worked at a top ranked NYC school. This LI school inflated grades to keep parents happy, while in NYC the grades were what they were. The LI was SO laxed on Regents grading, it's no wonder I had 99-100% of my kids pass the Regents every year (not to mention that NYS created the biggest farce in the new Regents grading and "curve")
While I look for a small district, my friend wanted a bigger district for more extracurricular activities.

Re: best school districts?
What are you looking for in a SD? Smaller district with fewer kids/schools? Or one that has more local elementary and middle schools? Agree with the teachers that responded already, it's a very subjective evaluation.

Me too. I went to one of the "best" districts, and I do not feel I am any better educated than anyone I know who went to a "not so great" district. In fact, I led a very stressful school career because everyone was so competitive. It was terrible.
