Best way to sell a car?
DH and I have a car we'd like to sell. We are the second owners (inherited it from a relative 2 years ago, when we needed a second car) so we know the first owner well and the car has been very well maintained and taken care of. It is in excellent condition and we just replaced the battery and all 4 tires. It's a 2005 Chrysler Sebring, black 4 door Sedan, with VERY low miles, c. 18,000.
Where should we list? How would you market a car that is older but in excellent overall condition and with such low miles? Looking for some tips to get the most buck!
TIA!
ETA - I sold a car once before and it was so long ago we put an ad in the NYT!! It was such a hassle though.

Best way to sell a car?
We posted ours in our local newspaper and got inquiries immediately - it sold within 3 days.
For pricing - I would look online at KBB and other sources to get an idea of where the pricing should be.

Craigslist, ebay, Auto Trader... some dealerships will even purchase a car from you if its in good enough shape. I dont know where your located but Browns CJD and Port Jeff CJD might do that... Cant hurt to try!
ETA: Be careful with pricing using KBB. They are VERY high and most people who are car savvy know that its not very accurate. I would use NADA or look at what similar vehicles are going for on ebay and at dealerships. I work at a dealer and we NEVER EVER use KBB. Its just way too far off. We value our trades based on what they are selling for elsewhere.

Re: Best way to sell a car?
Thanks for the info! Yeah, the value on KBB and Edmunds are pretty close. I feel like those sites don't take into account the condition of the car or the low miles. Just looking on craigslist for some comps and people list cars with 100K more miles as "low miles"!
Perhaps we will try a local paper and see if we get any bites.
I was thinking about posting it on facebook, but I don't exactly want to advertise to my other family members that we are trying to sell the car we just inherited a few years ago. The truth is though, we need a bigger car since we are expecting.

Wow! NADA says even more than KBB or Edmunds! This is a site that dealers use?
We are buying a new car and are trading it in, but are getting really low-balled by all accounts, these sites and comp sales.

NADA is used as a baseline for auctions and such. At least from what Ive been told. I have an old Nada book and the way it works is you get a base price based off of what model the car is. Then there are adjustments made for options and mileage. You cant just give a year/make/model and get an accurate number. Then there are also adjustments made for the physical condition of the car that is done when the car is physically appraised at a dealer/auction.
ETA: (again lol) A dealer will always go lower then what NADA/KBB/comps say anyway. Remember, they need to make money too. Plus they will be on the hook for whatever issues pop up with the car after you leave ie: oil leak, rattles, things of that sort.

That's great. I filled everything in, the only thing it didn't ask is about the appearance of the body, which is excellent.

Not if it's a dealership that plans on retailing the car and they know it will be an easy sell. Dealers typically go off auction values (Manhiem/Galves) and these numbers are usually lower than KBB. However if the OP is selling a Honda to a Honda dealership, that dealership may try to sell the car themselves and they would be pricing it at "dealer retail" pricing which is usually at least 10% higher than Manhiem.
Some cars are also hotter than others. I have sold a number of Jeep Wranglers for instance and I always get above book for them. They are hot used cars.
ETA: I would just bring the car in to the 5 closest Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealers and have them give you a number. A car with low miles like that they will definitely try to retail.

Re: Best way to sell a car?
Oh yeah, this is no Jeep Wrangler! Those do seem to hold onto their value, my BIL just sold a 1999 JW with a lot of miles for $8K!!
I realize we aren't going to clean up, but I just wanted an idea of a fair price for the car.
ETA: Can we bring it into a dealer to trade in even if we aren't buying a car from them?

a lot of what has been said is good advice. I think you're going to struggle with the typical dealers on trade ins. You have a car that is essentially 10 years old, a lot of new car lots don't want to deal with that age of car regardless of condition.
I normally look on craigslist for cars, and have sold a few on it.
you can also try a few smaller lots that deal in top condition low mileage type cars. In my area DP Auto sales in merrick is one, and Alpine car sales in Wantagh is another. Alpine is more enthusiast and performance, DP is a normal car lot, but they really deal with top condition and low mileage cars, and price somewhat high due to that, you can try calling them and seeing if they would be interested to buy outright.
keep in mind selling on your own will take some time and effort, making appointments, no shows etc.

When I worked for CJD we couldnt keep wranglers on the lot. They are HIGHLY sought after vehicles. Like PPs said, this is a 10 year old car. Yes its low mileage, but it cant be financed and most likely doesnt qualify for an extended warranty. A dealer isnt going to pay top dollar for a car that they wont make a large profit on. I do think you will find a dealer that is willing to purchase the car from you OP. Dont settle for your first number either. You can also go to Long Island Auto Trader on 25 in Smithtown. They will give you a written estimate for free. You can then take that to dealerships to work on getting a better number. I work one on one with the guy who runs LIAT and hes a great guy. Very fair and honest. He could probably give you some suggestions as well.

I just sent you an FM with some details. We are going to take pictures tomorrow and attempt a private sale. We have the dealer's offer to fall back on and our new car isn't in yet anyway!
If you are interested, I can email you pics tomorrow! Let me know!

DH sold his car on Craiglist in less than a week. He has three offers and was able to get full asking price.
