Beware the DOE and maternity leave
I just learned today that I was docked for my summer pay because I was on maternity leave during the school year. So, not only was I on NON-paid maternity leave for 8 weeks, my salary was pro-rated for the summer.
Why didn't my payroll secretary tell me this?

That is because your summer check is money that is taken out of every paycheck you get all year. If you had unpaid weeks no money was taken out those weeks to be put into your summer pay. Technically teachers are 10 month employees.
I had the same thing because I missed the last few paychecks of the year, but I was expecting it. Sorry it caught you by surprise.

I teach in westchester and I was out until February - non-paid. They adjusted my checks so that I would still receive my full summer pay. I am so grateful they did it that way!
ETA - they should have warned you so that you could have put money away!

Re: Beware the DOE and maternity leave
That happened to me. In fact I came back from maternity leave at the end of May and they never put me back on payroll. They told me that I would get a check in September for the time I came back and the summer Luckily I was able to fight it and they gave me a lump sum or I wouldn't have gotten paid at all.

Re: Beware the DOE and maternity leave
I am just peeved that no one told me! If I was told, then I could have been better prepared. At my salary rate, it isn't just a few hundred dollars...more like a few thousand dollars!
And it took me over 5 months to get a check they owed me from when they docked me earlier in the year because it took them so long to put me on leave. I left September 26th, but I wasn't put on leave in the system until April! My papers were just sitting there! So annoying!

It happened to me too- though I expected it. Though I did not expect to go back to work in mid-May and not get a check till the last day of school.
