Beyonce and Jay-Z trying to trademark Blue Ivy
I don't know if I heard this correct but I was watching Good Morning America this morning as I was getting DS ready for the day and think I heard that they want to trademark her name so that no one else can have it. Um..ok. That is so odd to me. I mean I don't like it when I hear other kids with my DS name but I don't own that name and anyone can name their kid whatever they want and just because someone else has my kids name doesn't make him any less special. And is that even legal?

Re: Beyonce and Jay-Z trying to trademark Blue Ivy
It's true. At first I but than after reading some stories on it, I can understand why.
Here is one:
Beyonce, Jay-Z Trademark Blue Ivy's Name Posted on Feb 8th 2012 4:35PM by Georgette
As reported by The BoomBox, both Jay-Z and Beyonce have made headlines this week for their respective appearances at Carnegie Hall -- Hov ripped through his hits at the venue for charity. Now the entertainers are putting the performance aspect of their careers aside to focus on a legal matter: trademarking their daughter's name.
The Washington Post reports that the power couple have filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect Blue Ivy's name. The trademark will reserve her name for future use of items like "baby carriages, baby cosmetics and diaper bags."
While most parents don't run to get their child's name trademarked, the rap star and the R&B singer were likely prompted to do so after fashion designer Joseph Mbeh submitted an application to trademark "Blue Ivy Carter NYC" on Jan. 11 -- four days after Blue Ivy's birth.
On Jan. 20, another application for "Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV" was submitted, this time to be used to sell a line of fragrances. Both filings have since been denied. Officials have said since the name belongs to a "very famous infant" that consumers would falsely assume any products with her name were approved by the celebrity parents.
Beyonce's company, BGK Trademark Holdings, is listed on the current application to patent Blue Ivy's name. The filing is still pending, however, the newspaper reports that it should be approved due to parents' having legal authorization to trademark the names of their minor children.

I read that yesterday and thought it was just so weird. Two common words : Blue and Ivy. It's not like the baby's name is something so uniquely made up that it should be trademarked.

It's not just Blue Ivy...It's Blue Ivy Carter. 2 applications were already submitted to be used for products. That weren't submitted by Beyonce or Jay-Z.
Another article I read said B&J want to use the name for a line of baby products in the future.
As the parents, I do think they have the right to the name before anyone else.

Ok this makes me even more sick. At first I thought it was because they are that arrogant but now it's because they want to profit even MORE off their kid and future kids as the article says...BARF and who the heck thinks of that 4 days after giving birth..."oh lets go file a trademark of her name so that we can sell baby purses and blankets and clothes" PUKE I can't stand them!

Honestly, I don't think they have anything to worry about. Blue Ivy isn't exactly a fabulous name choice anyway. I used to like J&B, but they are really starting to annoy me...

Actually.. I don't think it's a terrible thing. I mean other people are trying to cash in on their fame and their child. Why is it terrible to try to patent the name to prevent that? And big effing deal if they decide they want to create a line of baby things. They are famous, people like them and they can make money that will likely be Blue Ivy's inheritance one day.

There is a resturant named blue ivy and has been in business for years. What will happen with them? Hopefully they wont have to change the name?

They'd be smart to trademark it first and beat J&B to the punch.

I agree. A lot of people - famous or not - name their businesses after their children.
I think it's far worse that some random stranger is trying to capitalize on the name by implying there is a real connection from their product/service to B&J.

I agree.
It's not like they are trademarking it so someone else can't name their kid that. They are trademarking the name so no one else can profit from it creating products using their kid's name.

There's actually several companies named "Blue Ivy". They aren't copyrighting just "Blue Ivy", but "Blue Ivy Carter".
Blue Ivy Events http://www.blueivyevents.com/ Blue Ivy Solutions http://www.blueivysolutions.com/ Blue Ivy clothing http://www.blueivyonline.com/page/page/4056005.htm Blue Ivey School http://www.blueivey.com/ Blue Ivy Cakery http://www.blueivycakery.com/
Apparently, Jay-Z and Beyonce aren't that original after all....

Re: Beyonce and Jay-Z trying to trademark Blue Ivy
here i clear up a few trademark requriements
generally, you get a trademark only in the catergories that you apply for and you have to pay for each extra catergory
also you can only get a provisional mark for about 2 years without showing use and use is on a product. So if they wanted the mark - they would need to start soon
the Blue Ivy resstaurant would be keep its name because they already had it and it would most likely be in a different catergory

I think you're misunderstanding here... it's not the parents who were filing a trademark 4 days later, it was someone ELSE who wanted to put their child's name on their product...
Honestly, it makes perfect sense to do this - not so other people don't name their kids Blue Ivy (lmao) - but so other people don't take advantage and make a profit off their kid's name.

Re: Beyonce and Jay-Z trying to trademark Blue Ivy
I find it very strange that no matter what Jay Z and Beyonce do these days seems to get such harsh criticism.
I don't see anything wrong with what they are doing about the baby's name. They are not trying to prevent anyone else from every naming their child Blue Ivy.
They don't want other people to profit from using their daughter's name "Blue Ivy Carter". What is so wrong about that. They have worked hard to get where they are today and for some random person to simply come out with a product labled with the name of a famous child, why should they make tons of money off of it?
And I bet the same people who want to use the baby's name are the same ones who thought Beyonce was faking her pregnancy.
I say good for them!

ITA but for many people, they want to believe the worst of people and can't even calm down enough to read and comprehend thoroughly. If J&B should give every starving person in the world a million dollars now, many would still have an issue with it and say they are showing off....it's just the way with some! Believe the worst without applying common sense!!! What they are doing makes perfect sense to me!!! And I am no fan of either!!
