BFing and sore nipples
I never had sore nipples with my DS, but with DD OMG they hurt! My DS had so much trouble latching on in the beginning, but DD latched on right away. I think I was just so happy that she was latching and sucking that I wasn't focusing on the positioning and everything. Anyway, over the weekend I ended up with mastitis and my nipples are still so sore. I think she's latching on okay now so I'm hoping the soreness will go away soon. How long does it take for things to get better? I use Lansinoh after every feeding. Is there anything else that helps? Did anyone have sore nipples that just went away on their own? Please tell me it gets better!

Re: BFing and sore nipples
i remember mine hurting alot in the begininng and i used lanoish(sp) alot. it took a while but it the pain did subside. just apply that cream after each time she finishes bfing. your nipples have to just get used to it.
Now my DD has teeth and WOW does that hurt hehe

Re: BFing and sore nipples
The LC would give me a squeeze at the end of a nursing session and use the milk to coat the nipple.
I had pain and sore nipples till 3-4 weeks.
By 6 weeks, completely pain free

Re: BFing and sore nipples
It'll def get better
Since the mastistis, did doc rule out nipple infection like thrush? Sore nips can be caused by that too, and you can have it on your nips and DD show no signs of it in her mouth.
When i had sore nips in the beginning i'd pump every other feeding so they could get a chance to heal since pumping if different action them than baby does.
Feel better soon
ETA: Also see if you can let them air out a bit after putting some of your milk on them too.

Re: BFing and sore nipples
in the beginning mine were a mess, but healed quickly. I used lanonlin, and shields.
They have soothing gell pads too.

Re: BFing and sore nipples
you can get shells at bru. They will protect the nipples while they heal. This way they don't rub on your bra or shirt and allows them to air dry after each nursing. They have been a gidsend of me. You can also try the gel soothy things, They go right on the nipples and ohhhhh the relief. Ds had major issue on the beginning so I have tried everything in the book for relief

Re: BFing and sore nipples
Thanks for the tips! I am putting BM on them after feedings too. I think it helps a lot. Those gel things sound good! I'll have to send DH out to look for them. I just wish it would go away so I won't dread feeding her. I have to make a doctor's appointment for this week so I am getting checked out. One of the midwives at my ob/gyn is a LC so hopefully I can get an appt with her.

Re: BFing and sore nipples
I am using a Medela Nipple Shield and it is WONDERFUL!! I cannot imagine breastfeeding without it now! The lactation specialist gave it to me at the hospital when I delivered and I know they sell them at BRU and BBB as well.

Re: BFing and sore nipples
About the shields...I was told you should only use them as a last resort because then you have to wean the baby from the shield. Has anyone had this problem?

I heard this also. Has thrush been ruled out? I had a terrible time with pain until about 10 weeks. Turns out the Lansinoh cream was irritating me and was too heavy for me also. I got a prescription from my OB, it was a compound. It's called APNO (all purpose nipple ointment). Works wonders. Never had a problem since. GL!

Re: BFing and sore nipples
It does get better. With DS I had mastsis too and sore/cracked nipples and it was just to much for me because he was always hungry.
DD latched right away also and my nipples were sore for the first few sucks but then it got better. I think I just have to get use to her latch because it was very strong. Now it's fine.

Re: BFing and sore nipples
I remember that feeling like it was yesterday. Everytime DS latched on it felt like someone put a fish hook through my nipple. Thank god it got better. I tried everything. The lanolin cream, the breastmilk, nipple creams of all sorts, and tea bags. I think what really worked was time. After the first two weeks it was sooooo much better. Just stick with it because it is all worth it in the end.

Re: BFing and sore nipples
Lansinoh is fine. Our Lactation lady suggested olive oil and air dry, no bra or tops so friction while healing. Also expressed Breast Milk is a natural healer. Hang in there, you are doing great

Re: BFing and sore nipples
My dr. and lactation consultant told me NOT to use Lansinoh.
I was told, and it worked for me, to rub my milk all over the nips.
Also, having them exposed to sunlight helps (I stood by the window indoors).
It went away after I believe 1 or 2 weeks.
