https://www.epi.org/publication/ceo-compensation-2018/
CEO compensation has grown 940% since 1978 Typical worker compensation has risen only 12% during that time ...
I think we should be focusing on the top tier salaries, not the bottom tier salaries....
Very true but many deserve what they make.
Why is it when this discussion comes up that the CEO deserves to make $50M salary, but the guy who cleans the toilets and stocks the shelves and packs the online orders deserves to eat out of a dumpster? Can the CEO not live a nice life on $5M or is that slumming it? The difference sure would go a long way towards keeping the lower workers who keep the company afloat from splitting a cardboard box under a bridge with 4 roommates and needing public assistance just to eat.
And why does all the money for increased wages have to come from the consumer? The consumer already paid the wages for the company's employees. It's just that like vultures the top tier management pulled up to the buffet first and ate it all and left the scraps for the lower workers and then passed the buck to keep their employees from starving on to the tax payer. Then they turned around and bought the politicians to eat the whole public assistance system. You can't have it both ways.
If the CEO can't survive on $5M salary then maybe he/she needs to buy fewer Starbucks lattes and pull themselves up by the bootstraps.
ITA some salaries are just insane but then on the other hand, many of us run out the door at 5pm while people who might make a lot more are working many hours later, maybe leaving their families for extended periods of time. Do you think a 15 year old flipping fries should make the same as a CEO or even just a manager who is working many more hours and have more responsibilities? Where is the line then how much we all make? Just like all kids get trophies. No one gets the best this or improved that. No one wants competition anymore and that is why motivation goes down as why should I put in more time at work when Joey at Wendy’s is going to make the same amount of money as me who for the majority of teens (as I see some have had to support their families) are working for some spending money and some savings?
So, you're saying that everyone will just want to work at McDonald's flipping burgers being yelled at by the public for thinking extra pickles meant 8 slices instead of 12 because where's the incentive now that minimum wage would be so lucrative what with it being brought to a livable standard over the course of 6 years for the first time since 1970whatever? Interesting theory.
By the way there are a lot, like A LOT of workers putting in a ton of hours with very little or nothing to show for it. At least the minimum wage earner is getting paid OT for the extra hours worked. But there are a lot, again A LOT, of salaried employees working round the clock without additional compensation. It's a fantasy to think that everyone working 80 hours a week at their corporate job will somehow be rewarded for that work. Do you know how many people slaving away at their desk are rewarded? By getting EVEN MORE work piled on for a job well done. "You've done such an excellent job here. Here's 75 more accounts to manage. I'm confident you can handle it. What's that? You haven't had a raise in 4 years? Well make it 5. It's just not in the budget. We've had to make a lot of cut backs. Actually, come to think of it, you could do with a little less pay." And no amount of travel or hours worked or high stakes decision making is worth the ceo making 1000x more than the company's employees.
Has Clark Griswald taught you nothing about how corporate bonuses work?
I have gone years without a raise and more worked piled on me so experienced with that.
Sorry but getting yelled at for extra pickles is not the same as getting yelled for possibly loosing a huge account that could make or break a company.
The extra pickles was just in reference to your argument that suddenly flipping fast food burgers would become a highly sought-after job.
Ok how about the greeter at Walmart? I would seek that out if they made a few dollars less than I do working after hours to not be overwhelmed. Leave the job at the job and not check emails. Making sure customers are happy and not looking to go elsewhere. Making minimal mistakes or your boss who is getting reemed out from their boss reems you out. Yeah I would seek that job then to make the same.
Maybe that is saying something about your own situation if a min wage worker getting a raise would negatively affect you. Maybe you also are underpaid for the work you do and the responsibilities you have at your place of employment.
(IDK about your situation. This is just an assessment based on your responses)

I believe in giving them the tools they need to succeed....education, training in a trade, childcare so they can go to school or work until they get their feet on the ground.
By voting for people that demonize poor people and want to cut all services?
And I don't disagree with some of what you're saying, but $7 is garbage in this day and age. A box of cereal and a pint of ice cream costs more than that. This barely covers a gallon of milk and a carton of eggs.
Places that have $7 minimum wage also have cheap housing and taxes and many other things. Food stores though, I agree are not much less.
THERE IS NO PLACE IN THIS COUNTRY WHERE $7/HOUR IS A LIVABLE WAGE,
I do not care where you are or how cheap the COL is, $7 is a joke! You can NOT support a mortgage, car, food, clothing, medical bills, electricity, water, kids etc on $7/hr.
I am horrified that anyone would think this is an acceptable amount of money to pay anyone!
I agree but simply stating the COL is less in these places.
But the COL doesn't matter when the pay is so low that someone cannot afford to remotely survive even in the cheapest of places.
Well I can tell you a friend who lives in a low COL area works at a job that was paying entry people $14,000/year. Yes $14,000. They had many apply and make that much. Many people here in this COL area make minimum wage and have homes and families and yes, they might not be living in huge homes and have all brand new cars and multiple vacations a year but surprise, they are able to afford living. I do agree and will always agree that minimum wage should be more but not to the point that others will lose their jobs or their hours get cut as then the increase won’t help anyone.
Why do you keep insisting that an increase will automatically cause job loss or hours cut?
Can you provide statistics on where that has been shown to be the case because I have never heard of that being an issue with increases?
Most minimum wage increases are minimal at best and barely keep up with inflation so I believe your assessment of the situation and what it means for others in the workforce is inaccurate. That seems to be YOUR fear but that isn't the reality of the situation.
Do you honestly think many companies can increase pay by $8 per person? That is $320 for full time per person. Not a few dollars.
MOST companies, especially large ones won't even feel it. Smaller companies like mom and pops have such small staffs to begin with that it likely wouldn't hurt that much.
I can see you aren't for an increase, that is fine. I just disagree, I think this benefits us all as a country. It does more good than not.
I am absolutely for an increase. You don’t see the obstacles. Even at my own job they had to cut pay for some people when they weren’t doing so well. It happens as not all businesses will be able to afford salaries and overhead, that might go up to pay for salaries elsewhere.
Unfortunately this happens too often. When I hear about companies downsizing their work force I always wonder if the ceo's salary and bonus was also cut. A lot of this is corporate greed. Cutting the workforce to boost profits and saddling the remaining employees with more work and unrealistic expectations. This is wrong. Studies show valuing employees helps a business to succeed in the long run. Wouldn't you strive to work harder if you felt appreciated? I can't even begin to tell you the high turnover rate at some places I worked when I was younger due to poor management and lack of management and respect for employees. All that + crap salary spelled disaster for these companies. How can a company function properly with a revolving door of employees coming and going? It leaves everyone else playing catch up.

Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan
So what I am hearing is that those who aren't as driven in life don't deserve a living wage. I think it's terrible to look down on people like that. If you work a job with a high salary and have worked to get hard where you are it is something to proud of but doesn't mean those who arent should be be stepped on to keep them down. And the argument that teenagers are going to be making as much as CEOs so it's not fair is laughable. For a teen working a part time job you're talking a few extra bucks here. Maybe they can save up for a car or something like that...Not everyone is going to feel fulfilled flipping burgers or sweeping the floors at yankee stadium but for those that do, we should pay less than a living wage? Many adults that have cognitive impairments or learning disabilities work these jobs and have families and lives like us and have the right to live and work the way that is best for for their family. We need to do better about taking care of one another as a society. It's the "not my problem" and NIMBY attitude that has gotten us where are today. Time to change things for the better...

Yes it is very sad. Luckily the company made more money and gave them back all the money that was cut. Some places do the right thing.

Re: Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan
50 years ago Americans were able to get well paying jobs (jobs, not careers), own a home, 1 or 2 cars, support a family of 4 or 5 on 1 income, take at least 1 local/domestic annual vacation, have a pension, health benefits, contribute to savings and a modest sized nest egg, all on just a high school diploma. People with a college degree had careers, lived an exponentially better life (bigger home, better car, nicer vacations, bigger savings). People were able to work at one company all the way to retirement. Earn the golden watch. How often does this happen today?
Today, younger people can't afford to leave home until they're in their 30s, they move back home after college, can't afford not to have 4 roommates to split the rent on a closet sized apartment, can't afford their student loans, their rent and monthly student loans eat up their income so they can't contribute to the local economy with their disposable income because they have none. They have no pensions, can't afford to retire, have no savings, have no emergency fund, can't afford to get sick and see a doctor or dentist, hospital visit, etc.
They're not getting married like previous generations, not having kids, not buying homes, not achieving half the things their grandparents and even parents did. They're not contributing to population growth. They can't afford to. The American population is shrinking. Yes, you might be doing well, maybe you're doing amazingly fantastic, better than your neighbors, but how does that benefit the dire outlook of this nation and its future? Maybe you think this doesn't affect you. But it does and it will in the long run. And it affects your children and their children. A country is only as strong as its most vulnerable population. It's like having the stability of a house of cards.
This is a problem for the future of this country and nobody should be more concerned than the maga america first crowd. Decades of jobs shipped overseas, shrinking middle class, the extinction of American manufacturing, automation, technology, workforce not keeping up with modern skills, corporate politics, crumbling infrastructure, etc. It didn't happen over night. It's been decades in the making. Decades of chipping away at the stability and security of the middle class. We're not first. We're approaching last.
What is the solution?

Everyone feels entitled to brand new things and the best. Growing up we had a 3 bedroom house with *gasp* one bathroom. One car and two working parents. Everything was second hand...clothes, toys, you name it. It’s so unheard of these days. Our country spends an obscene amount of money that they don’t have. A teenager could survive on $10-$12 an hour if they didn’t need designer clothes, a new car, a brand new cell phone every year, $50 manicures, Starbucks. You can’t compare people surviving on minimum wage back in the olden days to today....we live way beyond our means today.

Amen and gasp we still only have 1 bathroom. If you watch all these shows in tv, we have a “starter” home and people grow out of their home. Why? Just buy less and purge like the rest of us. It is more now to impress others than themselves with their accomplishments in life.

This is a part of the problem. I do agree with that. But for the large majority we are not talking about teenagers. I am referring to the working class. I have never had a designer bag, brand new car, or anything like that. Bought a 2 bedroom house that I could afford where my son and daughter shared a room God forbid. Life was just fine. I just think it's a ****** attitude to think people who do menial jobs don't deserve a living wage. And I'm not talking about these places out in the midwest where you can get a decent apartment for 600 bucks a month. To love comfortably on LI you need probably a household income of 150k to have a modest size home and afford the taxes. Tough to do on $10-12 bucks an hour...

What has gotten us here today is overly expensive unnecessary education. Keeping up with the Jones’.
I have many designer bags, have had brand new cars and don’t make anywhere near that. We live in a smaller home, vacations far and few between and have worked out butts off for what we have. Sometimes it is all about not living to impress the Jones’. I know many of our friends make more money but we all are on the same page when going out and doing things. I use coupons and look for deals. I have a friend who god forbid will use them. They also have no kids and very low rent. They don’t feel the need and that is their choice. Still doesn’t affect us being friends. I will say that our first apt is probably 3x what we paid when we got married and I find that insane for what we pay for an entire house.

Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan
I think people do not really know what it is like to be part of the working poor. Honestly I do not either but I have family members who fall into this category. Most of these people are the hardest working people you’ll ever meet. My aunt one year donated to her kids’ food drive and then wound up being the receipent of the food basket. She had nothing but always wanted to help out people who were needier than her. When I told her I was pregnant after dealing with IF for years, she bought me a few baby things from dollar general. People like this deserve to be able to earn enough money to live a decent life. Unfortunately, she has since passed away from cancer. She never owned a car or home. She never went on a vacation. She never got her nails done or her haircut. I think many people in the working poor category are living a life like this. They’re not trying to keep up, they’re trying to survive.

That’s why I advocate for $20+ an hour.
The majority of people don’t have enough in savings to cover a sudden emergency.
The majority of people in America make about $47k a year.
It’s unacceptable.
There’s enough for everyone. There needs to be wealth redistribution.

Re: Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan
According to Manta, this restaurant has an annual revenue of $2.5 to 5 million and employs a staff of approximately 50 to 99.
He can afford it. He just doesn’t want to pay. Maybe he should take a pay cut, or stop “keeping up with Jones.”

Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan
That restaurant owner also lives in a giant million dollar home with 5 bathrooms. Cry me a river.
Poor “small business owner”.

2.5 divided by 100 is $20,000/year

He did say the hospitality business not just his business.
Are you trying to say that someone who has worked their butt off and build a successful business should live like a poor person?

Oh you mean like their employees?
He will be fine. He will figure it out. He’s probably not paid much in taxes all this time too. And it’s Florida - he can buy a cheaper house. I mean you guys are saying that people should just live within their means… Maybe he should!

Actually my story was to say that if my aunt and her husband were both earning $20/hour they could’ve afforded things that everyday people consider normal like haircut. Instead they were straddling the poverty line for her entire life.

I don’t know him personally just showing how businesses are commenting on this issue.

It is very sad and we all make choices in our lives. I could have continued with more college and I have gotten jobs that require a BA with experience.
