BIG UPDATE!!! HUGE LIPA issue- any advice??
**update- they sent someone out yesterday, and I called back today, they adjusted my bill, its $100!!! someone put a 1 instead of a 0!!!
So we got our first months bill. mind you we lived in the house for a total of a week and a half. no cable or TV was set up until the week we moved in and then we were away for another 10 days. Everything in my house is gas.
The bill is over $2,000!!!!!!! And its for 1 months service with no balance forward on it
we asked DH's dad. He has the same size house and he said in the summer with in the window air conditioners and an in ground pool and pond running a lot,and 4 people living in the house, the most it ever was was $400 for the month
needless to say I called LIPA and they said both the beginning and current meter readings were conducted by a person not the homeowner. They even went back in the history of the previous owners and saw the meter readings to be accurate to what the end reading was.
We called our electrician who had recently upgraded our box and said there is no way a home could generate that much electricity in a month, nevermind the fact that we didn't even live there or have anything on.
They said that they will send a LIPA meter reader out tomorrow (which is really not necessary because DH read the meter today and its about what it was on the 21st) so that's pointless. they said if its accurate they will need to launch an investigation, which could take sometime.
I am convinced the previous homeowner has something to do with this!!!!!!! he had rolls of electrical tape on the ground under the meter, in the backyard and on the front step. we also found numerous electrical tools and tape all over the house, which my DH thought was very odd.
When the electrician was at the house to do the upgrade, he found live wires just laying in the attic. And just yesterday DH was trying to change the switch plates in the master bedroom. All of the boxes are wired wrong and are shorting out, needless to say we need the electrician back again DH said the previous guy did all of his own electrical I was wondering why every time I turn my hair dryer on the entire houses lights dim!!
What do I do? Anyone ever heard of this, or go through something like this?? Any advice would be really helpful

Re: HUGE LIPA issue- any advice??
I don't think the wiring had anything to do with the price. It seems like the previous owner used a lot of electric so they "estimated" what your next month's bill would be. Call them up and have them do a reading on the first 2 weeks that you are there. They will be able to adjust your bill. We had to do this with one of our utilities because they "estimated" and it was way off.

Not sure about the billing issue, but definitely get your electrician back asap to check ALL wiring in the house.. you don't want an electrical fire if the previous owner did something screwy by himself

Clearly I didn't read your entire post when I scrolled in my small window I would have them open an investigation and show them you only moved in 2 weeks ago! That's nuts!

Can you go out to your meter and see if it is moving really fast? If it is, I would have your DH turn off all the circuit breakers and one by one turn them on to see what makes the meter turn really fast. At least you can narrow it down that way.

great idea!!! going to call him now. I would *THINK* the electrician would have noticed this when he was there, but who knows anymore. DH did just look at it to read me the numbers, and didn't mention it. but again, who knows if they looked at it

Re: HUGE LIPA issue- any advice??
that is insane. you have only been in the house a short time you said right? you should contact your attorney and make sure they do not release the escrow money to the seller until this investigation is complete.

I don't think there was escrow because they turned over the keys that day, but its worth a shot. thanks for the advice!

What's normal speed mean? Mine goes really slow....like, really slow....mine probably takes a minute to go around fully.

Re: HUGE LIPA issue- any advice??
i would have LIPA or the electrician open the box and check the meter - sounds like the previous homeowner might have been flipping the meter - maybe he messed it up somehow.
Definately have LIPA do the investigation and I agree with PP - you should have the electrician check ever circuit - you dont wont have to have an electrical fire

Is there anyway someone is stealing your power? I know people do it for cable, can they do it for electricity too?

I was thinking the same thing and mentioned it to DH but he thinks the electrician would have noticed this, but LIPA should be able to tell when they come out I hope!

Re: HUGE LIPA issue- any advice??
Just because they send a person out to physically check the meter, doesn't mean they did it! There are plenty of lazy meter readers who say they do the job, but don't really hop fences to check them out
Also, could be a clerical typing error and possibly a backwards # on the meter reading?

Re: HUGE LIPA issue- any advice??
I bet it's something as simple as the meter reader transposing two numbers. Hang in there, I'm sure it will get resolved, even LIPA has to realize a $2k bill is not even in the realm of a possibility!!

This is freakin' insane! I can't wait to read the update regarding why the bill is this high. I think that's the cost of our bill for the entire year. We have a 3 bedroom extended ranch.

Re: HUGE LIPA issue- any advice??
I have personally watched a meter reader try and read the meter from over 10 feet away behind a fence... no way in hell can they see from that far away. Even with 20/20. I don't trust them @ all.
