Re: HUGE LIPA issue- any advice??
Try turning off and unplugging everything in your house including alarm clocks, computers, tvs, everything but your refrigerator. See how slow the dial moves, then one by one plug things in but don't turn them on. Check each item. Some things have phantom electrical pulls so even when they are in the off position, merely plugging them in will consume electricity. After that start turning things on. Note the difference in how fast your meter is running. When just your refrigerator is on, the meter should be moving extremely slowly.

Re: HUGE LIPA issue- any advice??
So a small update- i called them back to schedule an investigation and the girl I got was very helpful. she said there is no way we used that much electric, that the bill is very wrong. she said they are sending the meter reader out tomorrow. the dial is read right to left and we may have read it the other way, I'm not sure. but she also said that they punch the numbers into a very small device the size of a cell phone and she really feels that it is human error and should be a zero instead of a 1. I hope she is right it would make a huge difference. I have to call back tomorrow night to see what our reading is.
If its wrong, she said they will then launch the investigation, but they know for sure its wrong. I hope we don't have to go this far.

That cannot be correct. No way. I am home all day and my bills are never even $500. You need to have all of this investigated. I am sorry you are going through this.

Re: HUGE LIPA issue- any advice??
glad to hear the update that LIPA knows something is wrong. i can't see how you could use that much power in your house in one month. crazy!

I was just going to post I think that won't solve the problem I checked it again this morning and it clearly is on the 1, not between the 0 and 1 like the person had indicated it would be

i would have LIPA or the electrician open the box and check the meter - sounds like the previous homeowner might have been flipping the meter - maybe he messed it up somehow.
Definately have LIPA do the investigation and I agree with PP - you should have the electrician check ever circuit - you dont wont have to have an electrical fire
what is flipping a meter? the electrician opened the box but not the LIPA part DH said it was locked and its sealed inside this glass thing
The meter (the glass thing u mentioned - that whole piece) can be taken out and turned upside down and it will make the meter run backwards -- people will do this then flip it back before LIPA comes to read the meter.

It makes the numbers run backwards - so your meter wont show your true usage - basically stealing electric from LIPA

Also, could be a clerical typing error and possibly a backwards # on the meter reading?
