Birthing Plans
I'm almost 28 weeks and I am thinking that it's time that I should start preparing a birthing plan. I know that my preference regarding drugs/interventions should be on there but what specifically should I include? Do I need to write out who is allowed in the room? I feel so unprepared for his arrival, though I am incredibly excited to meet him!

I think it's important to think about those types of things, but I don't think that a formal written document is necessary. Just talk about what you want with DH and make sure that he is a good advocate for you.

Re: Birthing Plans
I think they're far more important if you're not going to get an epidural. If you are, everything else is pretty standard.

Re: Birthing Plans
I say think long and hard about each option and speak openly with DH. He will be your reminder and overall strength during labor and can redirect you if you start to falter on your original plan. Remember, you can plan all you want but the birth of a baby tends to go in it's own direction so just don't stress too much about the details but remain firm on what's important to you. :)) I can't believe you are due in three months!! Time is flying!!!

Birthing Plans
I found a website that helps you set one up I used that to see what kinds of things I might want on it. I picked out what l thought was important to me. Then I went over it with my OB and found out some things that weren't possible and some things were standard practice. Then I edited the list after talking with her.

I do not think it is necessary to have anything in writing.
If you are not planning on using drugs then some sort of plan is important.
I had one plan: go to hospital, get epidural and get baby out. I almost missed getting the epidural (I was 9+ cm when I got it.). If I have another, the plan will be IMMEDIATELY get epidural.

Re: Birthing Plans
You can write out whatever makes you feel better. It's not something you can hand to the nurse to follow or anything like that, they won't take it and use it as a guideline for your care, so really it's just for you. Whatever feel you need to be reminded of is what you'd put on there. Anything you want the nurses to know you'll need to verbalize.

Re: Birthing Plans
I think sometimes birthing plans can set you up for disappointment. When I first got pregnant I wanted an unmedicated birth. Then I needed to be induced so pitocin was started. I couldnt move because I needed to be monitored continously. Then my water broke and the pain intensified instantaneously - I received an epidural and foley. Then I wasnt progressing so they inserted an internal monitoring device. I ultimately had a c section.
The birth of my son was nothing like I imagined but at the end it is our birth story. We both came out like champs and I had an adorable baby boy. Dont get wrapped up in the little details - just give birth however it must get done :)

Birthing Plans
My birth plan was easy, drugs! It was what I wanted when she came out that I drilled dh on. No vaccine, no bath and if they had to take her out of the room for any reason he was to follow. I told she is your #1 priority no matter what state I am in. I also wanted delayed cord clamping but her cord was cut before her shoulders even came out. So as others said you can plan whatever you want and then the universe has other plans.

Exactly this. If you have a very specific birth plan I suggest you get a Doula who will be there to make sure the hospital staff carries out your wishes.
You and your DH may be super outspoken, but in the moments of labor you don't know if you'll be able to full verbalize your wishes properly.

Birthing Plans
Thanks all! I just wasn't sure if it was something that was "needed" regardless. I am all about doing what needs to be done, I'd love to TRY w/out meds, but if it's getting bad, give me that darn epidural! Knowing what happened with my mom when she had my brother, I know that it's important to be open minded and just do what needs to be done for the baby's safety and your safety (my mom had a ruptured placenta at 36 weeks and the umbilical cord wrapped around my brother's neck 3 times - emergency c with my mom completely knocked out as both were dying - PS, my brother was 8 pounds 6 oz at 36 weeks, no GD, they were released relatively quickly, but her scar is NASTY). I'll do whatever it takes for baby boy to arrive healthy!

Re: Birthing Plans
We had a birth plan that we developed with our midwives. I had an idea of how I wanted my birth to go - so no harm in creating one. I wasn't rigidly tied to it - I knew anything could happen, but fortunately I had an easy labor & delivery.

Birthing Plans
When I was admitted, i told the head nurse yes I wanted epidural when allowed, and that I wanted baby placed on my chest immediately. She noted my chart. That was the extent of my plan/wishes. It doesn't have to be too complicated.

Re: Birthing Plans
my plan was avoid a C at all costs as long as baby's health was not at risk. Was on the fence about an epi, but planned to get one if I would be getting pitocin. I ended up induced because my water broke and I was not progressing on my own. I got cytotec which wasnt bad, but once I found out pitocin was going to be next I asked for the epi. Still hurt like hell so I asked them to up my epi dose but they checked me and I was 10cm so I just kept going, didnt want to stall labor and risk a C.
This time around my "goal" is to go into labor on my own and avoid an induction, if no pitocin I may go natural, if pitocin I def want an epi. Would love to avoid a C, but would also love to avoid tearing/episiotomy this time.
Not writing anything down. Only thing I plan to say is I want skin to skin and to nurse the baby ASAP.

This!! IMO don't put anything on writing. The nurses won't look at it.

Re: Birthing Plans
My plan was get the baby out!
When you get admitted to L&D they ask you if you'll want an epidural or try natural (btw...don't be a hero...take the drugs!) i ended up with a c/s 2.5 days after i was induced.

Birthing Plans
When I got to the hospital my nurse asked if I wanted an epi, I said I'd really like to try without it and she was awesome and encouraging. When I changed my mind and was saying I needed one she reassured me that I could do it without. Nothing was in writing, they asked quickly when I came in and stuck with my original wishes.

True! Guess I'll just wing it and try to decide with DH beforehand some of the key things between us.
