Black Granite

I really want to put in black granite in our kitchen...my DH doesn't want to spend a lot of $$ on new counters - he thinks what we have is fine (it's a grayish Corian with black and tan specks but I'm not in love with it)...

Eventually we want to do a backsplash - either those small square glass tiles or white subway tile with white grout...I know that once we do the backsplash we are stuck with the counter - so that is the biggest reason I'd like to change it...

My question is, does anyone have a plain black granite? Is it expensive? How much is granite generally per sq foot? I tried looking on HD and Lowes just to get an idea but they don't have any prices listed...also is HD/Lowes granite ok? Or is it better to go to a kitchen/granite place?

Is there a such thing as inexpensive black granite? Chat Icon

Please help me convince my hubby we should uprgrade our counters hahahaha

Re: Black Granite

Granite is priced by grades, A, B, C, D. A being the cheapest per sq.ft. and D being the highest. There are higher grades but those are for rare colors.
From what I understand, depending on how popular and how much they have a particular color depends on the grade.
We recently received a quote and we are going with them for the following grade prices and it includes installation:

Grade A $55
Grade B $65
Grade C $75
Grade D $85

I am going to venture and say that absolute black or black galaxy will be either $55 or $65 a sq.ft.

If you look at HD or Lowes, there is usually a sticker on the samples that has the name of the color, the grade and then the price. If the price is lets say $74 it will be $74 sq.ft. might be installed.

Re: Black Granite

ok thanks. i know nothing about granite so that helps...

i know that the corian we have is really scratched up bad - i dont know what the previous owners did with them....so our options are either to have the corian re-surfaced or get something new....DH will want to re-surface to save $$ Chat Icon but i think granite would be so beautiful...

i am wondering if granite is scratch free? i wouldn't want to spend a lot on something that will scratch or show scratches...

Re: Black Granite

I priced the black absolute for my kitchen. It was about $1900 installed. I ended up going with another color but with the black absolute look into getting a honed finish.....its not shiny shiny like typical granite and it looked soooo nice. I have a sample sitting in my car and if it wasnt so heavy I'd send it to you......gives the black a different look.

oh and my kitchen counter is 35sq ft so it will give you and idea....

Re: Black Granite

just wanted to throw this out there about black granite, because i know a few people who have it.

I have heard complaints about how it shows everything and its pretty much impossible to keep clean, every fingerprint, dust particle, food particle shows up, and its a pain to keep it clean because once someone touches it, it leaves a mark.

see and i find the complete opposite. I have a black with blue in it and it doesn't show anything and i grew up with black absolute and my mother would never have picked it (or would have quickly changed it out) if it showed every mark.

Re: Black Granite

I haven't looked into this yet, but they do have granite tile countertops, the tiles are about a square foot each and its much cheaper (I want to say around $10 each, I saw them at the habitat for humanity restore in Ronkonkoma) I have seen the counters done on hgtv shows and it looked really nice, the grout lines are very thin blend into the granite, so it looks a lot like a solid slab. DH and I would try to do the work ourselves so I have no idea what installation would be like.
