i do not wear long gowns and I find black tie preferred so pretentious, so my answer would be a fancy cocktail dress. But if you are a gown person, then go for it!

Rent the runway. Start looking now, the availability sucks.
I went to a black tie wedding recently and 95% of the women were in gowns.

We went to one recently and I wore a long dress. But it wasn't expensive actually. To be perfectly honest, I had bought it on Amazon for $25 for a Halloween costume! But it was a really nice dress!

If you can’t find on rent the runway, lord n Taylor had some beautiful gowns and decent sales too. I was just there in bayshore.
