blackout shades that work?
I bought room darkening shades from bed bath and beyond and they're a joke!
can anyone recommend ones that actually make the room dark?

When we needed them (and I'm embarrassed to admit this) we cut cardboard out to the exact size of the window and put it over at bedtime, then closed he vertical blinds over that.
We're pretty tacky like that.

We got ours from home depot and they work really well. They cut them to fit and The trick is to make the shade a little wider the the window frame to block any light that would sneak through the edge. We double them up with room darking curtians and they rooms get really dark.

If you already have shades up, I had good luck with the Redi-Shades black out ones. These are the temporary paper shades that fold up and you hold them up with clips. You can put them under existing window treatments and hide them. They are 5 bucks a piece and work great.

Re: blackout shades that work?
We have the honeycomb blackout blinds, they work unbelievabley... DH works nights sleeps during the day sometimes and it pure sunshine the room is totally dark!! Like DARK!! We rent and they here from the previous renter to who worked nights as well, so I don't know what brand or anything but they really are awesome!!
Only downfall, when u want sunlight they need to be all the way up, so we have sheer drapes too I can close the drapes and no one can see in but I still get the light. :)

This is a great idea that I have to steal from you I just bought them (from Bed bath & beyond also) & they are as bright as my old ones. I can't return them since they're up so I am definitely going to try that because I'm not spending more $ on them. Thanks!

Us too! I got a basic roll up tshade that has an inside mount. I have a decorative roman shade over it. Our window is fairly wide and 4 years ago I paid $99 for it.

Re: blackout shades that work?
We have regular blinds in DS room, but we just put up blackout curtains over the window and they work really well. they are from walmart.
it has eliminated like 99% of the light that comes in there early in the morning.
