Bldg. Permit for Attic Fan????

We wanted to have an attic fan installed in our roof, and the town of North Hempstead told me we need a peremit for this?!? I never thought we would for this, does anyone know if this is correct? It sounded a bit much for this sort of job.

Also, does anyone know how you find out what jobs require permits? There were a few other things we wanted to do over the summer that we did not think required permits, but now I'm wondering.

TIA for any help!

I know, who knew this required a permit? A heating or cooling system installation I could see, but a fan? The woman I spoke with did say the roof kind that we wanted requires the permit, so if your fan is not in the roof, you should be okay.

The really stinky part is that our town building dept. is months behind schedule due to recent shake-ups, so there is no way we can have a fan by summer if this is accurate.

Re: Bldg. Permit for Attic Fan????

I know in the Village of Lindenhurst, you basically have to get a permit for everything. It is the town or villages way of making money. It's not a CO that you are getting. Permit = Money! I think, IMO, if the town or village doesn't know what you are doing in your house and you don't have to get the permit, why put more money in their hands. We already pay our taxes. Chat Icon Now when it comes to CO's that is different because then you can't sell your house if and when the time comes. But of course so many people get their CO's after they have done the work and when they are ready to sell their house. I know that is what our sellers did to us.

Ahhh, guess I'll see if we can get away without it. I called the electrician to see what he does about this--he's licensed to work in this town, so he should know what they require. Stupid me, I gave the woman there my address to mail an application.

I wouldn't mind so much if we could get this within a month, but the woman I spoke to said several months.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

But you are right Jen--I doubt they are going to drive around and look for this thing on our roof. I'll see what the electrician says, but we may just do it.

I live in an incorporated village and we need a permit for everything. Taking down a tree, having wires fixed in the house, when a plumber comes in, everything so I am sure we would need one too for an attic fanChat Icon
