Blood Clots?
Based on family history and blood/genetic tests, I am at risk for blood clots (My mom had a DVT during labor with me). I will have to take injections of blood thinners for 6 weeks after the baby is born. I am a little nervous about all of this and am wondering if anybody else has a similar condition or has been through this? Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Blood Clots?
Hey I have 3 genetic thrombophilias. I was put on blood thinner injections (Lovenox) at 8 weeks. I switched to Heparin last Saturday to prepare for the birth of my baby. I go off for 2 days so I can be induced and then back on Lovenox for 2-6 weeks (depends on how I do) after the baby is born. The shots really are not that bad. If you go on Lovenox just be sure to ice before and after. If you go on Heparin there is no need for icing. If you have any questions please feel free to fm me . Also depending on what factor you have you may should really be closely monitored during the pregnancy to make sure you are developing placenta clots or clots in you. Good luck.

Re: Blood Clots?
MTHFR and Factor V-Leitin.
On Lovenox throughout my pregnancy until the last 4 (5) weeks when I was on Heparin. Then after DD was born continued with the Lovennox for 6 weeks.
My OB didn't want me to go past my due date as there is a greater risk of clotting after that - but I wound up going 10 days late anyway, they just monitored me very closely.

Re: Blood Clots?
i have the mthfr as well as several other thrombophilias.....they were discovered when i was pregnant with my son. took lovenox that pregnancy from 10 weeks on and also for 6 weeks after. this pregnancy they started me on the lovenox at 7 weeks and i take one shot daily...will do the same, switch to heparin right before and then go off for two days and then continue after the baby is here again. the shots aren't the most fun thing (obviously), but they aren't terrible either. i didn't ever learn the icing part, but i guess every doctor teaches them differently. good luck to you!!!! ANY questions, feel free to fm.

Re: Blood Clots?
I'm on Lovenox for one strand each of Factor 5, Prothrombin, and low S protien. Been on Lovenox and baby Aspirin since around the 8th week of my pregnancy. I second the need for icing for Lovenox, my doctor was impressed with the lack of bruising I had on my belly. I will also be switched to Heparin closer to my due date and induced to deliver. Post partum I too will be on Lovenox again, but the doctors will let me know for how long b/c I plan on BFing.

Is there a conflict between these meds and breastfeeding?

i actually JUST read this last night bc i was going through paperwork.....lovenox is considered a protein so they believe there is no issue with you BF'ing while being on the shots. because its a protein the baby has the ability to break it down. so, in short, no, there isn't believed to be any conflict between the two.
