Blood clotting issues (Protein S deficiency, etc)
Has anyone had any issues with blood clots? Apparently I have a disorder, not sure if it is brought on by pregnancy or just something i have, and it looks like i may be predisposed to blood clots. i did have a blood clot (or some type of blockage) a few years ago and almost lost my vision in my left eye. However, doctors did not find any reason why i would have a blood clot. Now, i have some issues with my protein s level, which relates to blood clots. I will see a perinatologist in a few days.
Anyone have any issues like this or similar?
TIA

When I had a TON of bloodwork done at the RE, my Protein S came up low. HOWEVER, your Protein S drops when you are pregnant, and I had bloodwork done the day after I O'd, and I was already PG (didn't know yet). Even though I was barely pregnant, it should not have really affected the results.
I just take a baby aspirin every day per my OB-- but a hematologist told me that I didn't need to because it was borderline, etc.

Do you remember what your levels were? I really would hate to take meds during the pregnancy. I took baby asprin before i was pregnant, but stopped b/c it made me sick.

I have a protein s deficiency, but a mild one. I saw a hematologist and high risk OB before I was pregnant and they put me on aspirin and monitored my while I was pregnant. Luckily, I never needed anything more than the aspirin.
My SIL has a different clotting issue and had to take lovenox shots while she was pregnant.

Re: Blood clotting issues (Protein S deficiency, etc)
I have a borderline Protein-S defieciency as well. My hematologist has been watching this for 2 years prior to my pregnancy. My OB and hematologist both decided to put me on lovenox a blood thinner. I am supposed to start heparin now and then switch back to lovenox after delivery. IMO...since you had a blood clot I would feel more confident being on one. The lovenox is no big deal at all, except that you have to get used to injections but that you get over quick.

Yes I have the disorder.. I was told it can damage your placenta and cause miscarriages.. I have have 2 prior m/c before being treated.. I am 8 weeks pregnant now and on baby asprin an 2 shots 40ml lovenox per day.. See a specialist and get diagnosed.. Also I plan on remaining on baby asprin for the rest of my life just to be sure..

Re: Blood clotting issues (Protein S deficiency, etc)
Definitely talk to your doctor. Blood clotting can cause miscarriages if left untreated. I don't want to scare anyone, but definitely talk to your doctor about it. You may require nothing, or aspirin or a blood thinner like Lovenox (no coumadin or plavix during pregnancy). I will always be on Lovenox/heprin when pregnant and baby aspirin when not.

Re: Blood clotting issues (Protein S deficiency, etc)
I have a protein S deficiency. My hematologist is not convinced I "really" have it, since my bw was done 6 weeks after having a miscarriage, she thinks it might have been still low from the pregnancy. However, she didn't want to take any chances and I am on low-dose lovenox - 40mg/day. I was on baby aspirin till about 8 weeks, and then my RE, OB, and hematologist decided it was a good idea to come off it and just continue with lovenox. I have had no complications with this pregnancy. I'll be tested again after the babies are born to see where my levels are at. I don't remember what my specific numbers were.

Re: Blood clotting issues (Protein S deficiency, etc)
I was diagnosed with homozygous MTHFR when I was pregnant which basicall means my blood clots too much. I was on Lovenox during my pregnancy and then for 6 weeks after delivery

Re: Blood clotting issues (Protein S deficiency, etc)
Thanks for the replies everyone. I really didn't think anyone was going to reply, so I feel better knowing i am not the only one with this issue.
If anyone has a great OB, high risk dr., or hematologist to recommend, I would appreciate it. So far I am ok with who i have, but I am always looking for good names.
I don't have a hematologist and I may need one. Turns out i have some kind of MTHFR genetic mutation as well.

Re: Blood clotting issues (Protein S deficiency, etc)
I have one copy of the MTHFR mutation as well-- for which I take additional folic acid. Although, the hemotologist told me that my homocystine levels canceled out the mutation-- so, again not really a big deal.
I have some docs in Manhattan if you are interested-- all at Cornell NY Presbyterian at 68th & York.

I have MTHFR and was also on this treatment with no ill effects. I recently switched to haparin to prepare for delivery.
