Re: Blue Nevus (Mongolian Spot)
More common in certain ethnicities...my friends daughter has/had them. My girlfriend is Irish and looks it. When the doctor was examining the baby at her first appointment she said something about her being a "Latina" or something like that when she saw the birthmarks...her father is from Chile.

Re: Blue Nevus (Mongolian Spot)
Yes, my son has it on his butt, and on his lower back. (real lower back)
But then crazy me started reading the book, My sister's keeper. It said that the girl has bruises going up her spine, and that she has leukemia. So I really freaked out this morning, called the dr (good thing they weren't on call), but I think I might call again tomorrow.
Derek's just seems like his is getting darker, and a little bigger as well. I know that they are supposed to go away by the time they are two, but does it just get worse before it gets better?
Also, we are not latino either, and I heard that it was more prevalent.

I read that book....they never said it was a mongolian spot...
But that being said, brusing in general is a sign of leukemia, but not like that.

No, I know they never said mongolian spot, but the whole bruising thing freaked me out. I just am getting nervous that it seems to be getting bigger, when I thought when he grew, it would get smaller?

Re: Blue Nevus (Mongolian Spot)
I am hispanic. I guess that is where one of my girls got it from. When she was born I was so upset I thought she got it from delivery, but then realized it was a birthmark. She is 15 months and still has it.

Mongolian spots are birthmarks and only involve the skin. While they are more common in certain ethnic groups they can occur in others. Caucasians have the least occurence of about less than 10%. Im Hungarian and we are the only caucasian group that has a higher instance of Mongolian Spots at about 25%....
Im sure DS is fine. I would just take him to the doctor to ease your mind and so you could ask all the questions you need answered KWIM???

My son has one on his tush and you have nothing to worry about. It does fade over time. It's a birthmark.

Re: Blue Nevus (Mongolian Spot)
90% of them are gone in two years. They are always concentrated on the lower back/upper buttocks. They appear blue in color because the constricted blood vessels are not near the surface of the skin, they are deeper. If it were at the surface of the skin it would be red.
It's totally normal to worry - but a mongolian spot is harmless and will go away.

Re: Blue Nevus (Mongolian Spot)
This must be what Steven has on his lower back, right where his butt begins I always thought it was from falling on his butt. When he was an infant, he had a huge patch of black hair and I never noticed it. As he lost the hair, he got this thing.
DH is Puerto Rican.

Re: Blue Nevus (Mongolian Spot)
DD has quite a few...on her back, her booty, one on her ankle and and on her elbow. I asked her doctor about them on her 4day old visit and was told they were mongolian spots...b/c dh and I were both worried and thought they were bruises too from delivery. I'm of Indian and Spanish decent. DH is half Jamaican and of European decent...so DD I guess is the United Nations and was bound to get them!!!!

Re: Blue Nevus (Mongolian Spot)
Mongolian spots are present at birth, and most of them fade (at least somewhat) by age two. Most have completely disappeared by age five. If Mongolian spots remain at puberty, they are likely to be permanent. Fewer than five percent of children with Mongolian spots still have any by adulthood. Those who do tend to be the ones with multiple, widespread spots, or with spots in unusual location
