BM moms who went dairy free, how did you do it?
The Ped GI wants me to cut out all dairy from my diet (DS has bad reflux). It seems so hard to do. Everything seems to have dairy in it. Giving up cheese will be the hardest. How did you manage?

Are you allowed to substitute w/ soy? If so silk light vanilla soy milk is my fav, they also make a creamer if you like half & half in your coffee. You can also do soy yogurt. Personally I rather not have cheese than the soy cheese. Also So delicious brand peanut butter soy ice cream is so yummy.

Re: BM moms who went dairy free, how did you do it?
IT SUCKS.
I miss cheese SOOOOO MUUCCCHHHH and butter and cream.
I used Lactaid milk in my coffee and in other things. but other than that it's been pretty sad.
no ice cream...no cream sauce...no random hot chocolate from a posh french cafe...
I am an avid cook so I know pretty much all of the "code" words for dairy (bisque, cream of, parmiggiano . stuffed etc) I just avoid avoid avoid and when in doubt, I ask.
I am hoping this resolves itself before the summer. I can deal with the no ice cream thing now...not sure about July

really, once you get started, dairy is easy.
it was the dairy/soy allergy that drove me insane in the beginning.
with dairy, just a lot of substitutions.
a lot of cheeseless pizza...would just load it up with veggies.
good luck!

I thought Lactaid milk still has the milk proteins in it? If you're OK using Lactaid, can you have Lactaid scoopfuls ice cream?
My ped told me to stay away from all dairy, even the Lactaid products because he's not worried about the lactose, it's the actual proteins he's concerned with.
For the OP, it is so CRAZY HARD to go dairy-free, I won't lie. But once you make the change, it actually is easy. I don't do any substitutions, I just went cold turkey. I'm an ice cream ***** and would eat a big bowl of it every night so it was really tough in the beginning. Bfast is the hardest meal, (nevermind dessert, though ) because I can only have cereal with soy milk and some fruit or a bagel.
There are a lot of dishes you can make that are dairy-free --- we eat a lot of stir fry, meat & potatoes, grilled fish, roasted vegetables, rice, quinoa.
For me, it got way easier when I saw how much better DS was eating/sleeping. That made me feel like my b!tching should stop -- it was all worth it.

It does. You could try soy milk. About 40% of dairy allergic babies have soy allergy but mine did not. I used soy milk or coffeemate creamer. You can sub soy milk in a lot of recipes. My son ended up having to go on amino acid formula at 3 months even while I was on dairy free diet. I BF my other son(twins) until 6 months

Think about it this way... you'll probably lose the weight much quicker!
I just found a lot of substitutes - lots of soy products, and I always read labels

his issue seems to be the sugars (lactose) more than the proteins.
he's been fine with just the little bit of lactaid I have in my coffe/tea and oatmeal. and I supplement with gentlease as well which he is ok with.

Thank you ladies. The ped GI suggested I use rice milk instead of lactaid milk b/c the lactaid has the milk proteins in it.
I went thorugh my entire kitchen and realized I have to give up (hopefully temporarily) fiber one bars, oreo cakesters (my guilty pleasure) and most other snacks. I will try to eat more fruits and vegetables and look into soy products. Cheeseless pizza wont be too bad if I get other toppings on it.

I just wanted to let you know that oreo cookies themselves are dairy free! Since going dairy free for my DD they are my splurge!

I used rice milk for my tea, not gonna lie it sucks, but they do make a vanilla flavored one that was more bearable. I just gave up cereal and only used the rice milk for my tea and oatmeal. No ice cream which is nearly impossible for me, I eat a pint of B&J every night but there is a dairy free ice cream and a gluten free one too that is actually really good, Turtle Mountain is the brand, there's one that uses soy and another that uses coconut milk, both are pretty good. But like a pp said, once you get into it it just becomes second nature, but it was definitely heaven to get my bEN & jERRY'S back.

Re: BM moms who went dairy free, how did you do it?
I'm dairy and soy free and it was very overwhelming at first, but now I'm used to it. I was a big dairy eater and I thought there was no way I could stick to the diet, but I have, and plan on continue doing it for a year.
I don't eat most processed foods anymore and do most of my shopping at my local health food store. I found lots of substitutes to cook with, like dairy and soy free "butter", rice milk, and nut based creamer. In the beginning, I went to supermarket and spent hours reading labels, now I know which products are safe so shopping is much easier. godairyfree.com has great information and product lists.
