Borrowing a Medela Breast Pump?

My sister-in-law lent me her Medela Breast pump in style advanced in a black bag which she only used herself like 3 times(she didn't like pumping). I bought the replacement parts from BRU, with the exception of the tubing which BRU didn't carry. They told me I had to go onto Medela.com which I did, but it referred me to a local dealer which I called to buy the tubes they told me I shouldn't borrow a breast pump because of contamination. Is this true?

Has anyone ever borrowed a breast pump motor? I don't know what to do? I don't know if they are just trying to get me to buy my own pump or rent one from them. Help! Chat Icon TIA!Chat Icon

Re: Borrowing a Medela Breast Pump?

It's never recommended to use someone else's pump.

Honestly, I would though if it was my SIL. The milk never goes into the motor of the pump so there should be no contamination. I would call up the number again and tell them that you need new tubing as this is your second child & you'd like to have new parts.

I have friends who borrowed breast pumps and have had no issues. Like you said, buy new tubing and parts. I can't imagine anything gets stuck in the little motor to cause infection or passing anything Chat Icon I think they may discourage sharing also because it cancels out the warranty on the product, but I am not sure. As long as all the parts are new and sterile, I really can't imagine it being a problem. I wish I could have borrowed one and saved some $$$.

BTW - ITS AN AWESOME PUMP!!!!

I borrowed a breast pump and i asked the lactation consultant about it. she said as long as it is someone i know, it's not a big deal. Apparently because the pump is not in an airtight container, there is the potential for germs to pass from one user to the next. But, if it's someone you know then it's fine. She said she wouldnt buy one off ebay or anything like that though! She will sell you tubes if you need them. FM me for details. she is in Nassau on the north shore. You can also find replacement tubes online really cheap as long as you know the model #.

Where online do they sell the replacement tubing? And how do I know Im getting new stuff and not someone's used tubing? Is it a reputable site. I'd rather have it shipped to my house then to have to take a ride to pick them up. I'm 10 days away from EDD and I'm Chat Icon . TIA!

No worries its only the tubing which does not transfer milk, only air. My SIL borrowed my pump and I ordered all of the parts for her from Medela. She ended up borrowing the double pump from the hospital though bc she had that much milk.

I borrowed my sister's for home use & left mine at work for office use.

As long as you buy your own attachments or sterlizing hers, I'd say you're fine.

Re: Borrowing a Medela Breast Pump?

You should never buy a used pump or an opened pump on eBay or something like that. HIV could be passed thru milk into the pump.

BUT if this is your SIL and you know she is disease-free then just tell them that you need new tubing for a new baby. period. It is against the law for them to rec'd that you borrow a PIS since it cannot be sterilized like a hospital pump so they did the right thing.

Homecare America in West Islip has the tubing. But they will ask if you are borrowing a pump and recommend against it. I am using my SILs pump. I don't see how milk could get inside and it is so much cheaper to borrow!

Re: Borrowing a Medela Breast Pump?

I borrowed my SIL's pump and used it for a whole year when I BF my son. She had another baby, so I ended up giving it back and then buying a new one for me. I ended up using the new one maybe once, and sold it. I didn't even buy new parts because it was my SIL - I just sterilized everything in the Medela bags.

Thanks everyone!

Homecare America in West Islip is actually the one I called where the guy on the phone advised against it. I guess they are just covering their bases. I think it should be fine being that it's my sister-in-laws. I bought all new parts and accesories for myself and my SIL pointed out that the milk never even goes into the tubing... it's just air. I should receive the new tubes in like five days. Thanks again for everyone's opinions. Chat Icon

I have to say this- HIV dies as soon as it hits air. There is no way that it could be passed to someone through a breast pump.

you can pretty much replace everything - they sell them for fairly cheep - everything but the pump. All you need to get are cups and pipes.
