DH and I both commuted to the city until very recently. We have no family or friends nearby. I ultimately took a job on LI for the very purpose being relatively close by in case of an emergency though I'm still about 45 mins away from daycare).
If we had to do it over we never would have left the city. We regret it every single day. Our quality of life is in the toilet. We hate where we live, I hate my job, DH hates his commute.
So to answer your question, ultimately we could not make it work with DD in daycare never mind in school. We considered a nanny but then what? The nanny puts DD to sleep every night and we never see her? I worked on the east side. If I left at 5 on the dot I could usually make the 6:05 train. Once I got to my car and got home it was around 7. And I'm mid Nassau so not that far.
We consider our move to LI to be the biggest, most expensive mistake we've ever made. Our plan is to eventually go back to the city. I don't mean to sound dramatic, but think long and very, very hard about this before you make the leap.
Unfortunately, I feel the same. I'm approaching 8yrs since I moved out of the city and have been counting down to my youngest's high school graduation since I moved there because then I will move back.
I moved out when I had #2 because I thought that's just what you did, mostly for space and schooling reasons. But I have so many friends and family members who have made it work with two and are so happy they did. Check out battery park city. I know quite a few families there and it is SUCH a nice community for kids and less expensive than the UES.
To answer the question though, we needed/wanted a nanny when we both commuted to the city.

Both parents commuting to city?
I started working from home. Otherwise I'd never see my kids. My hours are 830 to 530. My office is midtown east. I'd have to catch a 7am train and the The earliest train I can get is the 555. Meaning I'm home after 7. I'm in Western Nassau too. Plus the cost of two people commuting is about 10k a year between lirr and subway. Luckily I am able to WFH, if I wasnt I would probably find sone thing more local. My mom also watches my kids and if I worked in the city I'd need a nanny or daycare too. 7 to 7 is a long day for someone.
We thought about staying in the city. But it would've been way too expensive between the cost of decent space and full time childcare. At least at the time. We could probably swing it now but as much as I lover Manhattan I like raising. a family in the burbs.

I agree that an au pair or nanny is your best option. Are you able to get a job in the suburbs so one of you can be closer to your DC? also, where in NJ did you look. I know bergen county very well and might have suggestions of nice towns with decent commutes.

I wrote to the OP about this. BPC is a wonderful neighborhood and until recently it was considered the 'best kept secret' in the city Great community, great public schools. They will build another one where the Syms store was years ago. It is getting better each year. I have never lived in the suburbs since I'm from another country, but a lot of people say that BPC is like a suburb. Apartments are small, though, like everywhere in the city, but the community makes it so worthy.
