Day Care and Parents who work in the city
DH and I eventually want to have children and one of our biggest concerns is day care and how we can work it out with our jobs. We both get on a train at 8 in the morning and don't get home until 6:45. I am concerned that we're not going to be able to work this out with day care.
Does anyone have a similar situation??

Re: Day Care and Parents who work in the city
I was commuting with DS#1 and was not able to find a daycare that opened early enough and closed late enough for me. I got on a train at 7 and was home by 7 and most daycares open at 7 and close at 6. I'm sure there are home-based care providers that have more flexible hours, but we were looking for a more major place. We ended up getting a nanny instead, and then eventually I changed to a job on LI when I had #2.

Re: Day Care and Parents who work in the city
It is tough. We pay for before care so we can send them in at 630 in the morning. I can never drop off because I take a 624 train. That is DH's job. Luckily I get home around 5 so I can pick up. I know my daycare offers aftercare as well for those parents that can't pick up by 6pm.

Both DH and I work in the city and with our hours, we could not use a daycare center. We have a nanny who comes to our house.

Re: Day Care and Parents who work in the city
I don't work in the city, but my commute was over an hour. I found day care by my job so that I could drop off and pick up with more flexibility. I knew that if I had to stay late, I could always reach day care quickly.
The alternative (day care close to home) wouldn't work - even if I left work on time, I may hit traffic or something so I couldn't guarantee that I could reach daycare in time. I ended up loving the extra time with my DC.
Good luck!
