bottle question esp for btdt moms
when i met with the peditrician he said to use a fast flow nipple on the bottle. he said its better for the baby cuz there is less sucking in of air. when i went to look for fast flow nipples they are for 6 months. Has anyone used these with a newborn?

hmmmm, i would think a fast flow would be too much for a newborn to handle? ive seen my 6 month old niece choke with nipples that are too fast

Re: bottle question esp for btdt moms
We accidentally gave DD a number 2 nipple (faster flow) when she was a few months old and she was gagging the whole bottle down. We didn't realize at first that the wrong nipple was on there. Maybe if they get a fast flow from the beginning they are better able to handle it? I really don't know. But from my experience, DD wasn't able to handle the faster flow till she was older.

That doesn't seem right. When we switched to DS from a slow to medium flow nipple, he gagged and it was definitely too much for him.

We used the dr browns bottles. We didn't change the nipples for a while.

Start on the slow nipple, then medium, then fast. If you start on the fast, you are basically pouring the formula down the baby's throat, they can't keep up.
You will know when to move to the next nipple. Either, they will stop drinking after an ounce (bc they aren't getting food) or they will suck so hard bc they are not getting enough.

I don't understand why the doctor said that. We switched to medium flow at 6 months and it was still a little too fast. I would definitely stick to the slow flow for a while.

Re: bottle question esp for btdt moms
That sounds like bad advice to me. I would think it would promote gagging and overeating.
I would see what your child likes. My DD was really slow at feeding (and still is!) and we stopped increasing after the number 2's. We used 3's in a pinch but 4's were way too fast for her.
I BF'd but supplemented with one bottle at night starting when she was about a month old. BFing probably set the tone for her slow eating.

We never used fast flow nipples. We went from slow to medium and DD was fine with that until she went to sippy cups at a year.

Re: bottle question esp for btdt moms
That makes no sense to me. No way could DS have handled a fast flow nipple when he was a newborn. In fact we never switched from slow flow because he always practically choked on it everytime we tried.
