Bottles- those that went cold turkey

Those that went cold turkey with the bottles… how long until it took?

Not surprisingly, jacen is quite stubborn. I went cold turkey on the bottles on starting on Saturday. He drank very little (maybe 4 ounces all day). I gave him tons of water to keep him hydrated though. I did give him a bottle at bed because I felt like he needed to have something.

Yesterday it was the same story, although I think he drank a little bit more milk. But he’s stubborn. He won’t really drink from it. Although he’s more willing to take it if we’re in the car. But only a little bit.

I thought after the 2nd day or so, he’d start accepting it but it doesn’t seem like it.

How long can I go on like this? Is it okay if he’s only getting 4-6 ounces of milk during the day and then I give him a bottle at night (where he drinks about 6-7 ounces)?

Re: Bottles- those that went cold turkey

most children will NOT drink as much milk once the bottle is taken away and that is 100% OK.

DS will get 1 cup of milk a day (with chocolate syrup) and its about 4-6 oz.

they will get their dairy in other things they eat throughout the day...

cheese, yogurt etc.

as long as they are drinking other liquids throughout the day they will not dehydrate.

if you are taking the bottle away take the NIGHT one too, because your DC may hold out on drinking other liquids bc they know they will get the bottle at night.

DS was completely off the bottle by 12.5 months.

Hey Ali-that's how Analise was. It took about 4 days or so of chasing her with the cup with a sip here or there to get enough in her. We did and still do a bottle at night b/c she doesn't eat a big dinner. By 10 days, she was drinking like a champ and now I have to cut her off some days! Consistency is the key and I hope you can get that during the weekdays!

Re: Bottles- those that went cold turkey

We did cold turkey no bottles this weekend. Kaydyn didn't really dirnk much milk at all...so yesterday afternoon I gave her a sippy with a splash of chocolate syrup in it and she drank the entire thing in 5 mins.

I threw all my bottles out so there's no going back. This morning she refused the milk in the sippy so I told my MIL that if she didn't drink anything by dinner time to give her a little chocolate milk. I also told her to have her eat more dairy during the day.

Yeah unfortunately we can't do that right now. Jacen is on Zantac for reflux and he won't take it orally. So we give it to him in his milk. Once in the morning and once at night. So it would be a bigger problem for us if we didn't get it in him, you know? Chat Icon

Really? you promise???? Chat Icon

I think he's just stubborn and wants me to know he's p*ssed off. Chat Icon I even tried the chocolate milk and it didn't make a difference. Chat Icon

We packed all the bottles away and only have 1 left for nighttime. Neither my husband or I want to go back to all bottles, so we're giving it our best shot. Chat Icon

Re: Bottles- those that went cold turkey

It took my boys 1-2 weeks to get used to taking milk from the cup. The doctor told me not to worry unless they had dry diapers and make sure they were hydrated enough.

Just dont give in and give them ANY bottles or else it doesnt work.

good luck.

Re: Bottles- those that went cold turkey

Okay girls....

So it's been 4 days and he's slowly taking more and more from the sippy cup. Chat Icon Slowly, but we'll get there.

Tonight i gave him his sippy for bedtime instead of a bottle and he drank about 4 ounces from it. The past few nights i had still been giving him a bottle at bed.

So my question is... what am i in for tonight? Chat Icon He's going to wake up isn't he?

Re: Bottles- those that went cold turkey

I went cold turkey during the day one weekend - still gave him the before bed bottle and upped the ounces to make up for what he wasn't taking. After a couple of weeks he was taking so much from the sippy during the day that I had to continually decrease the nighttime bottle b/c he was drinking so much milk. Then one night I just gave him a sippy instead of the bottle. Now he drinks a full sippy of milk 3 x day (about 6-8 oz per cup)

so should i have waited on the nighttime bottle then until he was drinking more? Chat Icon

Nah, that's just what worked for us - but Ryan's a milk ***** so once he realized he was getting mostly sippys he would gulp it down. Sounds like Jacen is already up to 4 oz per sippy or so which isn't bad at all. How many do you offer a day? Maybe try 4 (with each meal and one before bed) to try to get the milk you want in him? But, honestly, after a year, they don't NEED that much milk anymore - 10 oz a day is perfectly fine Chat Icon
