Re: brazilian hair straightening
i had someone come to my house and I am absolutely in love with my hair now. Zero frizz and actually will dry somewhat straightish/nice waves (funny considering I can have shirley temple curls in the summer). I keep telling my DH "LOOK AT MY HAIR!!!"
it does have formaldehyde but its within the pre-established limits...
fm if you want the guy's contact info

Re: brazilian hair straightening
i had it done, and I really regret it. Allure magazine ran an expose last year that revealed that formaldehyde (sp?) is a big ingredient in the formula. Then the editor of allure ran an editorial basically saying that she thought that the expose would heighten awareness of a carcinogen in a treatment, but it only sparked more inerest in the treatment. She lamented American vanity, etc. I didn't know about any of this, and now I wish I hadn't put a carcinogen in my hair. I can't find the link, but this is what the magazine ran.
ETA: You should ask if the formula they'll use on me contains ANY "-aldehyde"--in other words, I was told that some formulations contain no formaldehyde, but they do contain preservatives chemically similar----so it's a loophole. Personally, I'd never get it done again. It's marketed as "keratin"-protein, ut the effective ingredient that keeps the hair straight is a preservative chemically identical or similar to what they use to enbalm people.

Just a question - do you only regret it for the reason of the aldehyde in it? Or did you not like the way your hair looked or both? I am just curious.
thanks for your input

Re: brazilian hair straightening
I regret it for lots of reasons. It looked good for a few weeks; then it required maintenance. I was told that it washes out slowly over time, which not only means it isn't permanent, but it means I was probably breathing that stuff in as it seeped out of my head in the shower.
I just hate how some formulas are being marketed as keratin treatments, when the active, necessay ingredient in them is a preservative. I feel scammed.

Re: brazilian hair straightening
I just had BHS done last week and I cannot believe the difference in my hair. I have thick, curly hair and in the summer humidity, it's usually a frizz-fest. Now I LOVE the way my hair looks and feels and it's so easy to dry. It used to take me an hour to dry and then flat iron my hair and it didn't come out anywhere near as well as it does now. 10 minutes and I'm out the door.

I posted a summary of that article you were talking about last year.
I am in grad school for Pharmaceutical Sciences w/ concentration in Cosmetic Science... anyway one of my professors specializes in hair. When I first heard about this treatment I asked him about it, and he basically said in his opinion keratin will not straighten hair and he has not seen any scientific research showing this. it is the formaldehyde that is doing the straightening. The keratin is just a marketing ploy.
It sounds so appealing because it is not permanent, but I could never go for it with formaldehyde. It would be a great way to "grow out" JHS though...

Re: brazilian hair straightening
You confirmed everything I read & heard. The treatment I got was billed as soewhat "lite," & I will never get another one again, so I'm hoping I didn't do any damage to myself. BTW, your son is gorgeous!

Re: brazilian hair straightening
If you are concerned about formaldehyde the best thing you can do is educate yourself on the ingredients and the person performing the treatment.
You should also be aware that formeldahyde is a common ingredient in many many beauty products including baby shampoo, bubble bath, deodorants, perfume, cologne, hair dye, mouthwash, toothpaste etc.
It can be listed under different names such as quaternium-15, dimethyl-dimethyl (DMDM) hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, and 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (bronopol). Laws in the US don't require manufacturers to list all phthalates and all the ones listed above which are considered "Formaldehyde donors."
So basically, whether you use Sally Hansen's nail polish (formaldehyde) or Johnson and Johnson's Baby Shampoo (quaternium15) you are being exposed to formaldehyde but in small doses.
hope that helps you to make an educated decision about whether or not the treatment is for you....

I actually did educate myself about what formaldehyde is & isn't & what it's in & in what quantities. There are certain products that have active campaigns against them--like the brazilian treatment because of the fumes it produces & its concentration of chemicals & there are products that have stood the test of time & not been identified as containing carcinogens such that they'll actually cause cancer from regular use. I pick & choose among what you listed re: brands and whether to use a product type at all. I also trust that Julz, with her eduation & training as a chemist, corroborates what I had believed to be true (or at least potentially true) about the straightening treatment. It is, as you said, a personal decision that should be well informed.
