Breaking the swaddle habit
How do you do it? DD is almost 4 months. I tried one arm out...she just swats at her face and pulls her binky out (which she needs to sleep). I tried just going cold turkey...rocked her to sleep, but she was up 3 times in the first 45 minutes doing the same thing. It's like she has no idea what to do with her arms when she is supposed to be sleeping. How do I break this habit (I want to get her out because she is starting to roll on her sides, and I am afraid she will roll over soon)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Breaking the swaddle habit
I'd love to know how to break my dd of the same habit. She is 12 weeks and if she isn't swaddled she grabs her binky and throws it, scratches her face and moves all over and wakes herself up. This child barely sleeps as it is if I take her out of the swaddle she doesn't sleep at all. Anyone else have some advice?

Re: Breaking the swaddle habit
DS was weaned from the swaddle at about 4 months old. We swaddled him with one arm out first, then both. It took a few nights for him to get used to it. It is a new experience/feeling for them but eventuallly he got used to it. Then we moved to sleep sacks which works really well. They will eventually learn to self sooth and that is a goal of sleeping.

Re: Breaking the swaddle habit
DS was 7 months old when we finally 'broke' him of the swaddle
We went cold turkey one night and did CIO all at once (he was waking up 2-3 times a night even still swaddled) It was 3 very hard nights but heaven ever since then. He's 2.5 now and still sleeps so well!

Re: Breaking the swaddle habit
We did it around 4 1/2 months, he was breaking out left and right and waking himself up. Ped was surprised that he still let us do it.
We tried the one arm thing and it didn't work so we went straight to a sleep sack. Ped said as long as he felt warm and cozy, it would be an easy transition.

Re: Breaking the swaddle habit
DD was swaddled till she was 8 months old. We never tried to "break her of the habit", as it was comforting to her. As she grew, the swaddle just naturally got looser and looser until it was barely even a swaddle. She now sleeps with the blanket she was swaddled in.
I have found with things like this (like the pacifier my oldest one had until he was 4), they tend to "outgrow" things on their own.

Re: Breaking the swaddle habit
DD was out of the swaddle at close to 8 months old. when she was in the swaddle she did not try to roll around so i wasnt worried.
we went cold turkey because she was breaking free of the miracle blanket herself so i felt she was ready then

Re: Breaking the swaddle habit
We swaddled DD until she was 7 months old. It was the only way she slept.

Re: Breaking the swaddle habit
We just started wrapping him looser, he would break out of it while sleeping on his own. Until he no longer needed it. Many do not agree, but I would let DS sleep with a receiving blanket every night after he no longer needed a swaddle.
