Breaking the Swaddle Habit
Zach is 4 months old now and we’d like to start really breaking him of being swaddled before he starts to roll over consistently. Right now we have him in the one arm swaddle, which has been working out well. The problem is that now he’s becoming strong enough to start breaking the other arm out too, which wakes him up.
We tried last night to just put him to bed without being swaddled at all and he slept for 45 minutes and then was up crying for a couple of hours – nothing we did would console him. So we ended up re-swaddling him and this time he fell asleep and stayed asleep.
Is there anything we can do to make this transition easier or are we in for a few sleepless nights of Zach just crying himself to sleep?
Suggestions?

What about both arms out and swaddle his legs for a bit.

Re: Breaking the Swaddle Habit
We just went cold turkey but we had them sleep in a rocker so they were upright. This helped so they didn't startle themselves being that they weren't used to having their arms free. Maybe you can start with naps and still swaddle at night?

Re: Breaking the Swaddle Habit
Ok...this will sound strange, but this was the ONLY thing that worked for us.
With DS, we got to the same point as you--he was sleeping consistently with one arm out...but every time we tried with both arms out, he was awake every hour
So, one night I got desperate and tried this and it WORKED!!! I put him in a regular Halo sleep sack, pulled one of his arms through the armhole and left the other arm inside the sack. This way his other arm was still contained, but he got used to that arm being somewhat mobile and not pinned against him.
Within a week or two, he started figuring out how to get the other arm through the hole, and by then he was back to sleeping again.
Try it, and let me know if it works for you!

Re: Breaking the Swaddle Habit
i cant help much, but i did it first with a nap and i did it cold turkey. i was lucky and my DD didnt have a transition problem, but if you start with naps, it might be easier on you. since the nap may not be that long, it's not as big of a deal if they wake up early, kwim? it gives them a chance to get used to it before bedtime.

This is what we did...first we did one arm out for a few nights, then both arms out, but kept the swaddle around her middle, and then I finally took it away. It was definitely a rough couple of nights though. We also tried more than once. We tried around 3.5 and 4 months, and she just wasn't having it. It did work when she was 4.5 months.
