Breastfed baby? Gripe water? Gas?---UPDATED AT BOTTOM
Any help would be great. DD (1 month old) is breastfed except for one bottle that DH feeds her in the middle of the night For the past week I have been noticing DD "struggling" while breastfeeding - pulling off, crying, reattaching ect.... So I mentioned it to her doctor at the 1 month visit and she said it was gas I am vegeterian and love spicy food so she said my diet was not helping at all and recommended gripe water I started it on Wednesday but gave it to her at 7:40 pm and then did her bedtime routine - breastfed her at about 8-8:15 and she seemed great - no struggling on the breast and burped a thousand times easier Now DD wakes at 2-2:30 and Dh feeds her enfamil RTF formula which he has been doing since day 1 - she vomited everywhere (she ate 4 oz which she has done before) so we dont think anything of it Now last night same thing - gripe at 7:40, bedtime routine, breastfed at 8:15- everything is good. Wakes up at 2:30 - DH feeds her enfamil and she vomits everywhere!!! What is going on?? Is it the gripe water?? The recommended amount is 2.5 ml and we are only giving her 1.5 because I honestly do not love giving anything medicine wise to either of my children. Can anyone help? did this happen to anyone else?? TIA
ps- DD seems fine otherwise. Eating normal, playing ect...

Can you pump so that the bottle in the night is BM? This way you can see if it is the formula.
Also, have you tried eliminating one thing at a time from your diet? Have you eaten anything different recently?
ETA have you tried Mylicon? My ped was not crazy about us giving DD gripe water.

Completely agree, it's probably the formula. Try giving her a pumped bottle. My DS had all types of tummy troubles up to 2 months...I didn't eliminate anything from my diet (just no caffine and alch) and at nearly 7 months now he eats everything and is a happy little chunker. I'm confident this phase will pass!

I completely agree. one of my twins had that reaction all 3 times we gave them formula.
We used/use gripe water all the time and have never had any reactions. We have also used gas drops with no reaction.
I also had to cut out all spicy food and most veggies, even the bland ones, for a long time. and most dairy. I'm almost a vegitarrian so this was rough, but little by little I have been able to add foods back in and they tolerate it.

It's not odd that's she been getting an Enfamil bottle at the 2:30 am feeding since day one and now all of a sudden since the introduction of the gripe water she has been having a reaction to the Enfamil bottle and throwing it up?

Re: Breastfed baby? Gripe water? Gas?
I have been pumping since day one so I have no problem giving her a breast milk bottle but I thought that would make the problem worse since that is what I thought was giving her the gas ?
I have cut back on the gassy foods already but it is really hard since I am vegetarian ! I am left with nothing but carbs and that's not healthy :(

Re: Breastfed baby? Gripe water? Gas?
Sorry one more question - what's the difference between gripe water and mylocin? The pharmacy only had gripe water that's why I got it - I also liked that it was all natural ingredients - but I have no blue what the differences are ?

It might not be the "gassy" foods - it could be anything.
I would def stop the gripe water and see if that makes it better - that is the obvious solution.
DD was so gassy and was a major spitter for about 7 months. We did mylicon, gripe water, zantac. I eliminated dairy and nuts and all gassy foods. We tried everything, saw two ped GIs, and then one day it just stopped and she was fine and never spit again. Sometimes they are just gassy!

can you try not giving her the gripe water and see if she spits up again? i have used gripe water- i feel like it makes the baby produce a larger than normal burp- but def not a spit up.

Re: Breastfed baby? Gripe water? Gas?
My LO is 2 1/2 weeks old. Im pumping and giving breast milk as well. Last weekend she started to get gassy and fussy so bad. I was told to cut back on dairy. I did but same issue was happening and only at night. All day she would be fine. I was told to cut out dairy completely. Then we introduced a formula bottle at bedtime. Gerber good start as per ped. First night she was great slept unbelievable! Second night she was up half the night with horrible gas screaming and grunting fidgeting trying to push something out. It was terrible.
I have tried gas relief drops from little tummies which do seem to work she burps easier and gas passes a lil easier but shes still gassy. Then last night same thing. Bad night for her.
Called the ped today and she changed the formula because she thinks lo either cant digest dairy or may be having an allergic/colic reaction to it. It was changed to enfamil nitromegin. Ill let you know how it goes. I also bought gripe water but want to ask ped about giving it to her before i do. I hope this makes a difference because i dont want lo to have another bad night. I dont know if you experience this but she has also had explosive bowel movements which go everywhere... This is also new... I just wanna figure this out already!

your baby may not like the milk based formula. Maybe try the powder gentlese from enfamil for newborns.

Re: Breastfed baby? Gripe water? Gas?
Aside from issues at the breast does she appear uncomfortable? I would start with eliminating the gripe water and seeing if that makes a difference. My DS likes to suckle. He has gas issues as well but also does what you describe when he wants to suckle and is full. I have a strong letdown and it's too much for him. At that point he gets his pacifier and doses off. Good luck!

Re: Breastfed baby? Gripe water? Gas?
It could be that during her night bottle she is getting more air from sucking harder. You could try a different bottle first or just give her a pumped bottle first and see what happens. Her tummy may also not like the bm and then formula. You could try doing 1/2 RTF and 1/2 BM and see how that works. I know you have been doing this for a month, but she is getting bigger so things are changing. Her suck is better, she can eat more and so on. It could be the gripe water. My dd hated it and we did Mylocin for her. I tried both with my ebf son and what we learned was he didn't burp...he just passed gas instead Now that I think of it at around this age (1month) he was horribly gassy and we were at a loss. I then did the night feeding at the breast and he was fine. Until he was 3 months old I ebf him 99% of his feedings. He just threw up after most all bottle feedings for 2 months for no reason. I don't know why but as long as he was nursed he was easy peasy.

Re: Breastfed baby? Gripe water? Gas?
Thank you so much for all the help and information. We decided last night to skip the gripe water and give the enfamil RTF bottle as usual and see what happened. She was fine. No throwing up at all. She did however take a half an hour to burp and would not go to sleep until she burped because you could see she was uncomfortable and squirming around. But it is better than her throwing everything up that she just ate. I am debating to try some mylocin drops but am going to do nothing for a few days to just make sure that it was definitely the gripe water that was making her throw up. I also started making some changes to my diet - not so much veggies, salads beans ect....even though it is really leaving me with nothing left to eat since i do not eat any meat or poultry and try not to over do the the fish since I am breastfeeding. Thank you again
