breastfeeding moms
I didn't get any bottles or breastfeeding pump/supplies at my shower.
Since I'm planning on breastfeeding, I'm thinking I don't need the pump right away. See how it works out.
Also, thinking bottles can wait.
Does this sound right ? Or crazy ?

Re: breastfeeding moms
I plan on breastfeeding but at the same time I only bought a few bottles just in case! I also don't know when I am going to start to incorporate pumping since I will be going back to work.

Re: breastfeeding moms
I am also planning to BF and I think the pump is something you can definitely wait on for now.
I would definitely want to have some bottles around though...just in case. Don't want to have to run out to buy some when there's a hungry newborn crying at home .

Re: breastfeeding moms
I'm holding off on the pump (I'm going to look into renting one from the hospital first), but I do have a few bottles on-hand that I got at my shower (the Dr. Brown's gift set). I'm eventually going to pick up a few more Playtex drop-in bottles, but since I won't need them for a few weeks I think I'm good.

I got the pump right before my induction. You can return an unopened pump at BRU within 45 days of purchase. Personally, I was very glad I had the pump on hand. DS ended up in the NICU at 2 days old and I needed to pump. I used the hospital pump when he was in the NICU. While I was still at the hospital, DH opened and sterilized my pump. DS was in the NICU for a few days and wasn't discharged until the evening. I needed to use the pump after every feeding for the first several days after I was home.
Every situation is different, but you may want to think about buying one right before your due date or making sure that if you need to use it right away, someone can buy one while you're in the hospital.

Re: breastfeeding moms
I put bottles on my registry just in case BFing doesnt work out. I would rather have them there right away, I would hate to be running out, like the pp said!

Re: breastfeeding moms
if you are serious about BFing, and think that you will want to pump and bottle feed eventually, i think it's a good idea to have the pump (unopened in case you want to return it) and a few bottles on hand just in case.
however, if you don't want to pump, you just want to EBF, and think that you'll be switching to formula if BFing doesn't work out, then don't bother - the hospital will send you home with a few 2 oz. bottles of formula for just in case, and you can decide in a day or two if you want to see an LC and keep trying to BF, or just go for formula altogether.

Re: breastfeeding moms
I would wait on the pump. You're better off renting a pump at the beginning to see how BF'ing will work out for you. If BF'ing works out then invest in a pump. You never know what'll happen when your little one is born. I never imagined DS would end up in the NICU and experience nipple confusion from the formula they were feeding him. I ended up exclusively pumping for 8 months instead of EBF'ing like I originally intended. Exclusively pumping worked for me, but it doesn't work for everyone.

Re: breastfeeding moms
I agree with some of the others about having bottles on hand. I am BFing and I waited until DS was 4 weeks until I bought the pump and started using it. They say it is good to wait a little bit to make sure your supply is good.
I got a bunch of Dr. Brown's bottles at my shower and I thought I was going to use those. I also got some drop ins. I read that the Drop Ins are better for when you are breastfeeding so I used those with DS and stuck with them. I returned the Dr. Browns bottles and now when DH gives DS a bottle we use the drop ins. We will continue to use the drop ins when I go back to work in September.
I would suggest getting breast pads and milk storage bags if you are going to pump. I pump into the Medela bottles and transfer into the Medela bags for freezing.

I needed to run out on the day after we got home to buy a manual pump because I became engorged and was in major pain! (I was borrowing an electric pump from a friend but was still waitng on the new tubes, etc I ordered).
Also the second night we were home, Ann had 2-3 bad feedings in a row that I felt I *had* to give her some formula (she was 26 days early and had lost a bit more than normal between birth and hospital discharge) so I was glad I had bottles at home.
