Re: breastfeeding or formula

I breastfed my first daughter for just over two years, even though my original goal had been just a few months. It wasn't easy, but I will absolutely be going that route again for the health benefits.

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I plan on breast feeding and supplementing with formula. I know it may be difficult but it is something I have always wanted to try.

Re: breastfeeding or formula

Great thread and no animosity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those planning to just try breastfeeding, or those who have, what did you buy ahead of time? Did you have supplies on hand for both BF and formula feeding? I'm having a C-section, so I will be even less mobile to run errands and I don't want to stress DH out too terribly. See, I often think that BFing would not work for me but I don't think I would want to give up before I even try!

I was just going to ask the same thing. should I register for breast milk storage containers, maybe a small amount, just in case? Can you use regular bottles with breast milk, or do you use it right from the containers? (in case I decide to pump ahead of time, just so I don't have to bf in public)

I do hope to try to take a class to get some of these answers, but I haven't felt up to it. Also, I hope that I can take a class where it is okay to say that I might not BF!

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I am hoping to pump for a couple of months and then switch to formula. That of course being that my milk comes in and Chat Icon is okay just getting that.
I have the medela pump which worked great for me last time along with some bottles to pump into (sealed from the hospital). I did get the Medela kit along with some regular bottles that I will store BM in.

Of course I am totally realistic that she many not even want the BM and I may have to FF at the start. But I hope to at least try

Re: breastfeeding or formula

For my first baby- I was so gung-ho about nursing. OMG- we had every set back in the book, except my supply.

My DD didn't latch well- then I got infected on both side- then I got a yeast infection on my nipple- which my DD also got in her mouth.

I pumped for three months- no supplementing. It was the WORST three months of my life. I was so depressed about not being able to BF.
I could not get over how awful people made me feel (not on this site) about not nursing. What was more upsetting is that I had milk-tons and tons of milk- just no latch.

I plan on BF my #2 ( I am pregnant). I really hope we have a good start. I actually plan on hiring a private lactation consultant to help me.

With all that being said- there is nothing wrong with FF. You have to be happy. As my DH always says:
Happy wife=happy life!

Re: breastfeeding or formula

most important thing is not to put too much pressure on yourself, see what works for you... I wanted to breastfeed and even though I was in so much pain I kept on doing it until one night I just broke down and couldnt do it anymore... anyways, now I am pumping so DS is still getting the benefit of my breastmilk but just the thought of breastfeeding gives me nightmares...

I am planning on formula. I just have never had a desire to breastfeed, and DH and I are both ok with our decision. It is frustrating when people look down upon our decision, but in the end, it is our baby, and our decision. I think breastfeeding is fine, but not for me.

Some advocates of bfing will tell you not to have bottles, formula, etc in the house because it's too easy to throw in the towel. BFing can be very hard and very demanding.

The hospital will send you home with a diaperbag for BFing moms that will have some powdered formula samples. So you will have that. You can also ask to have the premade bottles that come with sterilized nipples that the nurses use. You will want some bottles though. I don't think you need to have storage containers at that point because your supply probably won't be an abundance and if you are going to bf, you should exclusively do it for the 1st week to help build up your supply.

I would also contact a Le Leche Group before you give birth so you have somewhere to go for support. A support group is so important especially if it doesn't happen as easily as you expect it to.

There are some wonderful ladies on this board that can really help out. Kellymom.com is also a great resource.

With my first DD I had a very difficult time breastfeeding. If I had had formula available I probably would have switched during one of my weak moments.

Re: breastfeeding or formula

This topic is a hard one for me. I will be 100% honest and say that I would really rather bottle feed. However, Dh STRONGLY feels that our baby should be breastfed. He knows it is my body and choice, but he is convinced that this is the way to go. So, instead of fighting about it AGAIN, I have agreed to give it a try. I am hoping that it comes easily to me and that I enjoy it. But my gut tells me otherwise. I don't want Dh to resent me for not trying, and I hope he doesn't resent me if it doesn't work out. I am starting to resent him for pushing it on me....
But, I figure we have made a fair compromise at this point.

I am going to BF again and try to pump. If it doesn't work, I will use Enfamil with Lipil i it agrees with him.

If you want to give BFing a real try, there is no need to buy anything in advance. If you sign up on the formula sites you'll get lots of samples in the mail and the hospital will give you soon as well -- that would be more than enough to cover you in case of emergency. The rest can wait. You wouldn't start pumping for a few weeks unless there is a serious problem with your latch, and if that is the case you'd likely get a perscription for a hospital grade pump from your doctor. BFing doesn't come easy, so I am a believer that you shouldn't make it too easy to quit in a moment of exhaustion... I think this is enough detail for this thread, feel free to forum mail me or to post on parenting -- there are lots of women there who have wisdom to share!

Re: breastfeeding or formula

Oh-and I bought Medela storgae bottle and these little nursettes off eBay, plus a bunch of preemie nipples to start. Juliette only used preemie nipples on her bottle until she started on a sippy cup.

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I BFd for 5 weeks. Suddenly DD won't take the breast anymore. I am pumping but not getting much so I will be moving to formula soon.

I suggest trying BFing since it is the best for your baby - but in the end, DC may wind up making the decison for you!

Re: breastfeeding or formula

I am BFing. I also pump to have a supply on-hand. I decided that it is healthier for DS, and I try to follow a holistic lifestyle. It is a very personal decision, but even the organic formulas are not as good (according to Ped.) as breastmilk.

I do supplement when I have to (usually during a growth spurt), because even with pumping DS seems to be insatiable.Chat Icon

ETA: Since I was warned that BFing is not always an option, I rented a pump & then bought one once I knew it was working Chat Icon

What a nice thread Chat Icon

I only formula fed. I decided before I had him that I was only going to formula feed and then strangely, my milk never came inChat Icon

Formula is expensive, but not the end of the world. DS is on Gentlease and it runs anywhere between $23.49 and $28.99 for a big can, which last about a week right now for us. I get formula checks (which you should sign up for either way) and last week I paid $14 for a can at Target. Regular Similac or Enfamil is a touch cheaper and both Target and WalMart have generic of it and the generic costs about $11 or so.

HTH!

What are formula checks?

Formula checks are coupons. Sign up on all the websites (Good Start, Enfamil and Similac) and you will get coupons for them. I had originally signed up for only Similac b/c that is what the hospital put us on, but then switched to Enfamil. Plus once you are on Parenting you can swap what you don't useChat Icon

You can also sign up early b/c they send them based on your due date Chat Icon

HTH!

Thanks!!
