Brooklyn
What would be a good neighborhood for a young (mid-20's) single guy to live in Brooklyn? Something on a train line that wouldn't be a horrible commute into Union Square but not break the bank.
The only places I'm even sort of familiar with are Park Slope, Williamsburg (and those get pricey) and Bay Ridge.
TIA!!!

Re: Brooklyn
I know some people in that age bracket who live in Greenpoint. They tend to have roomies though.
Mostly everyone else I have known have lived in the Bay Ridge area, or parts of lower Brooklyn where it's a little cheaper, but obviously a much longer commute to the city.
Not to change the topic, but would he be open to Queens? Granted it has been a few years, but I always was able to afford to live in some pretty cool neighborhoods on my own, in the social work field, even before I got my Master's.
My fave hood was Sunnyside, but I also lived in Woodside, Elmhurst as well as Flushing near Kissena Park.
ETA: I always found my places through the local newspapers/Irish papers or word of mouth and friends moving out and me taking over.

the Slope and Williamsburg are good options. Greenpoint is good too, except that both Greenpoint and Williamsburg are only accessible by the G and L, respectively, and those often don't work. Prospect Heights is good - slightly cheaper than Park Slope, but basically as close. I moved to PH 2 years ago and love it.

Ohh yah forgot about Fort Greene, good call!
The problem with LIC is that there are some really nice high rises... but not much else. So I guess it depends if he is looking for a neighborhood or not.

I'm talking about north of queens bridge, which some parts are technically astoria but marketed as the new lic

We lived in Bay Ridge for a few years. I loved the neighborhood, great place to live. We would have stayed but, we needed to be closer to family after I had DD.

DH grew up here and we lived in Dyker Heights for a few years. Train ride is a little long though.
Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Red Hook.

BIL lived in Fort Greene before moving away for law school. Young, single in his late twenties. He could walk to Atlantic which is a huge hub for trains including the NRQ which goes to Union Square. Prospect Heights is good too. I also have coworkers in Cobble Hill.

Re: Brooklyn
My sister lives in Red Hook, it's a little more upscale than its hipster counterparts like Williamsburg, and she loves it.

Re: Brooklyn
^ Red Hook is a cool area but the commute via subway is a royal PITA. It would entail a long-ass walk to the subway or a bus + subway commute.

Re: Brooklyn
Commuting wise, downtown Brooklyn and surrounding areas (Park Slope, Fort Greene, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, etc) are obviously the best, but also the priciest. Not sure what he is looking to spend. I'm in southern Brooklyn so I'm partial to it but Bay Ridge is definitely a good option too. It's a further commute but still a good spot for a single guy. Lots of restaurants and nightlife. And in addition to the R train (which can be sloooow), there are a bunch of express buses.

I don't know about Brooklyn but some people were saying Queens and I definitely recommend Astoria. Great neighborhood and very accesible to trains and buses (which will take you quickly to more trains) :)

Re: Brooklyn
I personally would rather live in Queens than Brooklyn, I think the commuting is easier - Astoria is such an easy commute and its such a great area!

It does so! I'm there a lot. It's a lot more affordable than many of the other neighborhoods posted.
It's not the prettiest, but it's not overcrowded with non-NYers and yuppies and I generally feel safe there.

Completely agree with these and Park Slope but when I was looking for an apartment on my own in these neighborhoods, I couldn't afford anything decent and my price range was up to $2.3K.

The commute to Union Square isn't bad from Bay Ridge. I lived there for several years and loved it.
