Re: Brooklyn
I would seriously advise AGAINST anything that relies on the R line (e.g., Bay Ridge). The R line is going to be undergoing some pretty length reconstruction soon (post-Sandy). The R was never a super reliable line and the commute from Bay Ridge is long, but with this construction planned, I would stay FAR AWAY.
What type of crowd does he like and what vibe does he want? Bensonhurst or Coney Island has a few cafes, although it's no longer a really lively destination. But the trains are more reliable (D and Q).
Fort Greene, Williamsburg and Park Slope are cool. but they are pricey.
I would also recommend looking at Western Queens or even NJ!!

Well the MTA says it should only be until October so that's probably more like what.....March?
Wait a minute, I just realized its supposed to be until Oct 2014, right?? Oh mannnnnnn, I was just complaining about how my commute was going to be disturbed for the next few months. Jokes on me I guess

It's much ado about nothing. R is still running through Court Stree, so commuters only have to transfer at 36 street or atlantic avenue for a train into NYC.

That's exactly what I was going to say. Who rides the R through all the way anyway? Most people switch at 36 or Atlantic/Pacific if they want to get anywhere fast..

This is true. It just so happens that I take the R from lower Manhattan into Brooklyn and then transfer at DeKalb (easiest transfer EVER ) so that's the only reason it's annoying for me. Thankfully I'm near several other lines so not the biggest deal. I'm just mostly lazy

Cobble Hill, Carrol Gardens, Brooklyn Heights
Completely agree with these and Park Slope but when I was looking for an apartment on my own in these neighborhoods, I couldn't afford anything decent and my price range was up to $2.3K.
I always have to chuckle at this.
My aunt and uncle own a brownstone in Cobble Hill. When I was a kid they tried to sell for years and could not give the thing away...
NOW it is worth god knows, 3 million, and they get an insane rent for a small walk in apt!
Hipsters and yuppies made my aunt and uncle very rich

Brooklyn
I Live in LIC (queens) and I don't live in one of the new highrises...the rents in the older 2-6 family houses are much more affordable.
You really can't beat the commute to Manhattan- 1 stop from Grand Central and it's a fun, but not overly crowded neighborhood.
