Brushing your dogs teeth?

When I took my pups to their annual check up my vet said I really need to start brushing their teeth b/c they have a good amount of plaque build up. I have tried doing this but they give me so much trouble. If you do brush your dogs teeth, do you have any tips on making it an easier experience and less stress for them? Also, are they to be brushed every day or just every other day?

How big is your dog? For smaller dogs, I have learned that a finger brush is much easier then a dog toothbrush.

What I do is grab her head with one hand and brush with the other. It's not easy, believe me and I have to do it quick.

I also give my dog these every few days and my vet said my dogs teeth are perfection.

I try to brush their teeth every day. My 2 big guys it there and let me do it. My little poodle fights me tooth and nail. DH usually has to hold his body and put him in a headlock in order for me to brush his teeth.

Re: Brushing your dogs teeth?

Not sure what kind of dog you have but ours like to eat so we started by making sure they like the toothpaste. They have chicken flavor and all that. I would try tubes, put some on my finger, and see if they would lick it off. So far the only thing they hate is mint.

DH puts his left hand under their lower jaw and when they open their mouth to lick the toothbrush, he holds their jaw from closing. Quick, five back and forths per section of upper and lower and he's done.

We do this for both every day and there is still plaque but not bad. Chew bones can help but our dog's gums bleed on Nylabones so we don't give them to them anymore. Believe it or not, they chew on deer antlers.

I have two Shih Tzus.. both of them squirm and do NOT like it when I use the finger brush at all. I tried a regular brush too thinking I could cover more in less time. I will look for those flossy things. I have tried chicken flavor so far.. they just don;t like me lifting their lips... to get to their teeth. They fight me so badly! Shih tzus have a short snout so it's hard to get all this done.

I have a Shorkie (Yorkie and Shih Tzu). Try the flossy things, they love them and they make the teeth sparkle.

Lulu runs to the bathroom at night when I tell her let's go brush our teeth. We started when she was very young and now she loves it. We started with the finger toothbrush now we use the doggie toothbrush. I try to do it everyday if not everyother.

Petco, Pet Supplies Plus & Specialty stores do. Petsmart does not.

If you want to buy them in bulk down the line, e-bay or amazon is the way to go. They are $4+ in stores and in bulk you can get them for around $2 a piece.

My dog is tiny and it is a dual effort by me and my DH.
We wrap the little sucker in a towel and I hold him down while DH brushed his teeth.Chat Icon

Re: Brushing your dogs teeth?

My dog hates it. I need to get new toothpaste. I can still do it but she makes it difficult so I probably don't do it a often as I should.

She loves nylabones though and other chew toys that are good for her teeth so we supplement with those.
