BTDT BF/Pumping Moms -

I went to a breastfeeding class last night @ NShore - The instructor told us that you have to 'pump and dump 12 feedings (count, TWELVE) feedings, for ONE cocktail that your drink ..........(She defined cocktail as anything not beer or wine)

I have never heard or read this anywhere before - And I was Chat Icon Chat Icon

Not like I'm some crazed alcholic, but I miss my scotch !! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Is this true?

I don't believe that at all, if you have one drink, you should be fine. Honey, I live in England, we are advised to have a glass of wine while BF'ing to help us relax. I think one or two drinks should be fine. Enjoy!

Re: BTDT BF/Pumping Moms -

When I drank, I would only pump and dump ONCE! I was never wasted, but had a few(2 or 3)

Re: BTDT BF/Pumping Moms -

That's a load of crap. I would have a glass of wine and ds is fine. I was told that as long as you are sober enough to drive you can nurse. I didn't go out and get crazy drunk but yes I had wine with dinner. i never pumped and dumped. It would be too heartbreaking to dump the liquid gold down the drain.
I was told one drink was ok to have. One drink is one beer, one glass of wine or 1 ounce of liquor. If your baby goes a few hours between feedings then nurse the baby and then have your drink. Liquor leaves your milk at the same rate as your blood. by the time you baby is hungry the alcohol will be gone.

IMO that is ridiculous

ETA: I read extensively on the subject, b/c I like to drink beer and I wanted to enjoy a beer and be certain that I would not be harming my DD. In the 11 months that I BF I never once pumped and dumped. I also asked any Dr. I saw about it. NONE of them told me I should dump just b/c I had a drink. But as a rule, you should do whatever YOU feel comfortable with.

Absolute horsesh!t!

A) They say a little beer can boost your supply

B) Nothing wrong with a glass of wine here and there - might help mellow baby out Chat Icon

C) IF you go out hardcore and get WASTED, I can see pumping and dumping the two sessions after it - but 12??? NO freaking way.

I think she wants to make sure everyone stays sober - who would drink if they had to pump & dump 12 times??

ETS: I just re-read your post and saw that's it cocktail. Still, 12 times?? No way. Stick with wine Chat Icon

That's rediculous!! I was even told by my lactation specialist that beer brings on lactation!
I never pumped and dumped, but I rarely drank while BF'ing. I always waited a few hours and then BF. She was fine Chat Icon

Re: BTDT BF/Pumping Moms -

Just to clarify - and why I was Chat Icon
She said you can have a glass of wine or a beer and nurse as normal .........no reason to dump anything. -

But for ONE cocktail, you have to dump 12 Feedings ..........

What the hell is the difference between ONE glass of wine and ONE martini???? - Even if she said don't dump w/ the wine, but dump 1 or 2 w/ the martinin.........ok, maybe -
but don't dump w/ the wine and dump 12 w/ the martini ???????

I call B.S on her. I think I pumped and dumped ONCE because I had 2 vodka tonics one night in an hour. Never though if I had one glass of wine or a beer. 12 times? Is she insane??? That's like pumping and dumping for 2 days... if not more!!! Chat Icon

Re: BTDT BF/Pumping Moms -

I think that overly conserative. Alcohol only stays in your system at a certain rate, and it is not 12 hours unless you have 12 - 14 drinks. Some drugs do stay in your body that long, but not alcohol.

Re: BTDT BF/Pumping Moms -

I've been BFing DD for 15 months. I pumped & dumped when she was 4 weeks old b/c it was New Year's Eve, I was still building my supply, and DH & I split one full bottle of champagne.

After all the research I did, the consensus was alcohol leaves BM at the same rate as the blood - if you are under the DUI (not DWI - which is higher) limit, you are OK to BF. The other way to calculate is to wait 3 hours for each drink before you BF.

In the beginning, you should not skip a feeding because you are establishing your supply, so if you've had a drink, you should pump - dumping Chat Icon - I used the 3 hour rule.

No way. I've had a cocktail or two and fed a few hours later without dumping. That's the craziest thing I've ever heard.

Re: BTDT BF/Pumping Moms -

Sounds nutso to me but if you really want to check there are strips you can buy now to test if there is any alcohol in your milk - I guess you have to pump a little - test and it will tell you the levels.

Re: BTDT BF/Pumping Moms -

I haven't drank any alcohol since given birth, but there is NO WAY I would pump and dumb 12 feedings. I would be lucky if I can even pump 12 feedings a day.. my supply is not that plentiful, so ever drop is precious! Chat Icon
