BTDT: Birth Certificate / SS Question
Sorry to bother you ladies but I have a quick question for a friend.
How soon after birth do you receive the birth certificate and SS Card?
My friend is due early October and wants to go to Canada for Christmas to see her DH's family and needs to get a passport for baby.
She is worried that she will not have enough time ... any thoughts?

About a week for the ss card and around 3-4 months for the bc.
Tell your friend to fill out the ss info at the hospital and she can have them fill that out because she'll get that quick.
As for the passport, she will have to get a limited validity passport. At the hospital, she will have the hospital give her the Statement of Live Birth form and have her fill it out and take it IN PERSON to be registered and filed.
Tell her then to order the baby's birth cert. online and print out the receipt.
Then have her get the passport pics done and take everything (form, ss card receipt, pics, passport office. She wiill get the passport around 2 weeks later.

we got ss and birth certificate on the same day, 3 weeks after ds was born... he was born in manhattan...

I believe I received my ds birth certificate and ss# within 3wks. Just an FYI if your friend is from NY you do not need a passport to go to Canada. Adults need original birth certificate and a photo ID (drivers license) and a child needs a birth certificate. Your friend can look it up on the online thats where I found out whats needed.

3 Months for both and I delivered at Stony Brook. They take FOREVER there and the town said the same thing. I had to call them and hound them to get it done.
Also, they won't give it to you to file yourself at SB. They will give you a confirmation of birth letter (which is useless for the most part), but they do the BC electronically and then send it off to the town.

We got the SS card very fast, within 3 weeks I think.
Birth Certificate took a little over 2 months to get. Town of Huntington

4 mts for dd's birth certificate at stonybrook and 3 mths for the ss#...think its just that hospital bc my friends got them much faster then me
