BTDT Breast Feeding Moms
1) What is the best breast pump from your experience/comparison or what you have heard???
2) Is it better to wait to buy in case you end up not producing enough milk to pump? I ask because I assume once you buy one and try and it doesn't work you are stuck with it..right??
TIA!!

With my DS I used the Medela Pump In Style. I also used the hospital grade pump, as well as a manual hand pump. I personally liked the Medela out of all of the ones I tried.

I think you need to ask yourself some questions. - How determined are you to breast feed? - How will you pay for the pump (going through a medical supplier may take more time if your insurance is covering it, as opposed to running to babies r us or buying one in the hospital)? - Do you plan on pumping to build a supply or pumping when you go back to work? I was determined to breast feed and my DS wouldn't latch so a double electric pump was a necessity for me. I manually pumped until we ran to babies r us, and let me tell you it was miserable to do it consistently. I had originally only put a manual single pump on my registry as I figured that would do for when I went back to work. We ended up going to babies r us the day after we came home from the hospital because all I had was a manual that was not going to cut it.

Re: BTDT Breast Feeding Moms
There is also the option to rent one if you want to try it without the commitment of investing

Re: BTDT Breast Feeding Moms
I used the Medela Pump in Style with DS. I exclusively pumped for 2 months and it did the job keeping up. I also have an Avent Isis uno that MIL got for me. I liked that it could be used manual or electric and I felt that it had a stronger suction, I would use it after the Medela to get an oz more each side that the Medela couldn't get. It was a pain to clean though but DH did most of the parts cleaning since I spent all my time pumping lol.
I waited to get mine because of all the recommendations on here that a lot of ladies spent a lot of money on their pumps only to have breastfeeding not work out for them. So, I waited. I had a hard time breastfeeding in the hospital, had DS on a Tuesday, came home that Sat. My nipples were cracked, bleeding, torn up. I was crying every time DS wanted to eat. I was determined to do this. That Sunday I had DH run out to Target to go pick up the pump because I just couldn't take the pain anymore but I didn't want to give up. I strapped myself to the stupid thing for 2 months but then my dad died and I couldn't take the stress anymore. I slowly tried to breastfeed again and it worked out without any pain. He is going to be 16 months on Sat and we are still nursing. I was determined to never give up.
I would suggest getting extra parts for the pump. Since I pumped every time DS would eat so that I could keep my supply up, I would use the parts a lot and each time they need to be cleaned. DH did all the cleaning for me but having a back up set was really nice. Also, believe it or not nipple size changes, like one nipple can be bigger than the other or throughout the day they can change sizes. The pump came with the medium size I ended up going out and getting the small and large and the soft shield and switching and I would see a significant difference in the amount I would get depending on the size of the shield.
Any questions please feel free to FM me!

Re: BTDT Breast Feeding Moms
I used the Medela Pump In Style with my DD and would highly recommend (customer service was awesome too my bag started to rip and when I called they sent me a brand new pump!). I waited to buy mine until DD was about 1week old and I'm glad I did because if my milk hadn't come in or it wasn't working out I would've been upset that I spent all that money!

Re: BTDT Breast Feeding Moms
I have the Medela Pump in Style. It works very well for me.
I would wait to see how you do. Once you open the box, you can't return it. I used my gift cards from my shower to buy mine.

Re: BTDT Breast Feeding Moms
I definitely think its best to wait and see before purchasing a pump. I ended up renting one since DD was a preemie and I was told the hospital grade ones were the best for my needs at that time. This time around, if all goes as planned, I will purchase a Medela one.
