BTDT moms- baby sling/carrier
necessary? if so, for what activities do you use it?

It is not necessary, but it could be helpful depending on the child. Some babies just don't like the stroller.

I loved my baby k'tan -- I basically used it for walks around the neighborhood when she was small, trips to the grocery store or target. At one point DD didn't want to be put down at all so I wore her around the house (that probably lasted a few days). When we went to some BBQs when she was 4 months old or younger, I'd wear her around there too.
It's the kind of item that if you know you're going to want to wear the baby a lot, you can get one in advance. Otherwise, you can always order one once you get to know your baby.

I love my Moby and now my Boba and would never not use one, but I have 2 kids so it's really nice. I can wear him and still cook, clean and be with my daughter, plus we decided against a double stroller because I carry him. I have since birth and he was always happiest snuggled in  We are a huge babywearing family now. I wear him at church, to potlucks, to do activities, when we saw Santa...you name it and I wore him as much as possible. Even my 6'4" 350lb DH can wear the Moby with him comfortably. DD was never worn and will not tolorate it so IMHO I believe if you do it right away and stay with it baby will love it and continue to love it!

I LOVED LOVED LOVED my Wrap. DD was always in it. I found it comfy and dd was so happy in it. It was the one thing piece of baby gear I used the most. DD was in it for outings, shopping trips, dinner out, and around the house. It helped with my milk supply always having her in contact.

It's a huge help if you have a baby who wants to be held all the time. At least you can have your hands free to possibly get other things done.
