btdt moms: food allergies? egg allergy?
ds is almost 7 months and we tried egg yoke today for the 1st time. his chubby cheeks broke out with a red rash about 1/2 hour later and he spit up a bit. (he NEVER spits up, only projectile vomits from reflux.)
my questions:
~ did your dc grow out of the allergy? if so, when?
~ did your dc also have reactions to egg products (cookies, bread, etc.)?
~ how hard was it to keep dc away from egg products?
~ what do you do (besides call an ambulance) if your dc starts having breathing problems from any food allergy?
thanx so much!

Re: btdt moms: food allergies? egg allergy?
Hang in there.
Allergies are scary, but i know my PED as assured me most babies will not go into anaphlyatic shock over eating something for the 1st time (I have a deathly reaction to pine nuts, so i asked about this-pine nuts can kill me if i eat one). I have an epi pen for that very reason.
We thought my dd had a reaction to baby food carrots when we first gave them to her. She vomitted for 2 hours and turned white as a ghost. Our ped told us to wait a month and try again and sure enough, no reaction, no hives, no vomit, no death white in her face. It prob was something else or she grew out of it. Same thing happened with fresh blueberries-broke out in hives on her face, now blueberries are one of her fav fruits with zero reaction.
Yoke is the least allergic part of the egg, the white pose more of an allergic threat-reason why most peds don't want you giving them to young babies. I'd call the ped just to let them know what happened, but you are prob okay

My DD had a reaction to eggs the first couple of times she had them also. Now she doesn't get any reaction to eggs.

Ryan had the same reaction to eggs the first time he had them at 8 months. He was tested at one year, and he does have an egg allergy. He eats things with egg in them and is usually fine, but occasionally breaks out in a rash.

My DS is allergic to milk but you should definately let your child's doctor know about the reaction, especially the spitting up. That is how when found out of my DS's allergy, always spitting up when we gave him milk.
I would see if your ped. wants your child to see an allergist to test for egg and other allergies. Its the only way to really know.
If your child has a reaction where their breating is compromised, call 911 right away. Forget everything else and get an ambulance to your house ASAP.
If you child does end up having an allergy the ped. will give you medication and instructions on what to do during a reaction. Not all reactions need a trip to the hospital but anything that compromises breathing is an emergency and needs treatment right away.
Here are some names of Egg-containing ingredients.
Globulin
Albumin
Apovitellenin
Livetin
Ovalbumin
Ovoglobulin (and any other ingredients that begin with the prefix "ovo," including ovomucin, ovomucoid, ovotransferrin, ovovitella, and ovovitellin)
Ovomucin
Ovomucoid
Ovovitellin
Phosvitin
Silici albuminate
Simplesse (a fat replacer)
Vitellin
FM me if you need a name of a ped. allergist.

Pretty much the same here. She gets red around her mouth with eggs but can have cookies, cake, etc things with egg in them and she's fine. My mother says I had the same thing adn outgrew it but she can't remember at what age I outgrew it.

Re: btdt moms: food allergies? egg allergy?
The first time I gave my DD an egg yolk (not even the white) she had an anaphalatic reaction to it. Her lips, tongue and face swelled. I rushed her to the ped who administered bendryl. She is now 2 and even though her egg allergy has gone down, she still has an anapahatic reaction to it. She was tested about 6 months ago in the allergists office with a minute piece of egg - Same thing happened. Most children grow out of milk and egg allergies. Sometimes, it can take years for that to happen. Couple of things I would do: 1- Tell your ped. If your DC really has an egg allergy there are certain vaxes that they can't have - Like the flu shot. 2- Have your DC tested at an allergists office. My DD had an anaphalatic reaction her first time eating an egg. Also - Just because your DC has had certain foods in the past does not mean that they will not have a future reaction. 3- Reactions can come in many forms... Hives, asthma, red blotchy itchy skin, vomitting, gastro problems, etc.
