BTDT moms of toddlers with a dairy allergy
What do you feed them that helps them get the right fat intake?
Even with the fortified Silk, I have noticed that whole milk still has more fat. Because she can't have dairy- that leaves out cheese, yogurt, breads, etc.
I'm worried that she's not getting enough fat because her diet consists mostly of fruits, veggies, chicken, and deli turkey. We give her red meat at times as well. She loves avocados, and I think those are higher in fat.
We had her 15 month appointment, and the dr. didn't seemed concerned, but I am.
ETA: we had a "questionable reaction" to whole eggs (scrambled) awhile back, so her pediatric allergist wants us to hold off on eggs as well.

Is it all dairy or just Cow's milk? DS is on goat's milk & is doing pretty well on it. We also get goat's milk yogurt, etc.
Avocados are indeed high in fat, so that should help. DS used to eat a ton of avocado before he was introduced to fish and poultry.

I had the same worries...he grew out of his dairy allergy before 13 mos though...now we just have wheat and peanut.
during the dairy allergy, he practically lived on pasta and meatballs.
give a lot of grains and meat. that will help fill bellies up.

Re: BTDT moms of toddlers with a dairy allergy
Off the top of my head, I try to cook or marinade with olive oil to get some good fat in him. He really likes crackers (Town House, Club, Ritz are all dairy free) so I give him the regular ones instead of reduced fat. I use 80% lean ground beef. If I make other beef I get pieces that have decent marbling throughout so he's likely to get some fat in each bite. I buy skinless chicken, but you could get it with the skin on and cook it that way so some of the fat gets into the meat and pull it off before eating. My mom used to bake chicken with the skin on and let us eat the skin (it was really crunchy) and that has a good amount of fat in it.
As I think of other stuff I'll post it. I have a headache so I'm not thinking too clearly right now.
BTW: our allergist said no deli meats b/c of the high likelihood of cross contamination.

Re: BTDT moms of toddlers with a dairy allergy
i never really thought about the fat content...maybe that's why DS is so thin! DS eats soy yogurt. there are some margarines that are dairy free. You have super fresh in MD, right? The America's Choice soft spread (brown tub like country crock) is dairy free. I use that on toast and to cook some things with. The other margarines I know of are Fleishmans unsalted (green package) or Healthy Sticks (I get them at Whole Foods). I also give him Tofutti cream cheese. Hmm...the other potentially fatty things he likes... sausage, things made with ground beef (meatloaf, meatballs, tacos, chili, erc). He also likes graham crackers, teddy grahms, oreos, cereal bars from whole foods (nature's choice i think?), saltines, wheat thins, triscuits, pretzels, veggie booty. There are a lot of breads that are dairy free, just check the labels-Arnold has quite a few. A few of the store brand "complete" pancake and waffle mixes (just add water) are dairy free (shop rite, walmart, super fresh). Just trying to give you some other food ideas besides the already healthy stuff you're giving her.
My DS is allergic to eggs too. The allergy is to the whites so he can eat the yolks. He loves hard boiled egg yolks.

I give DD ckn nuggets, they're pretty high in fat. Also with her breakfast I try to smear on some margarine whenever it goes with what she's eating.

Re: BTDT moms of toddlers with a dairy allergy
DD has allergies to dairy and eggs in it's raw state but not in processed foods. She usually gets 1 soy yogurt a day and 18-20oz of soy milk a day. Then I just give her what I have on hand. I really don't give it much thought. I really wouldn't worry to much. I think if you are giving her a balanced diet then that is enough.
