BTDT moms of young ones on the nebulizer
This has become a nightmare.
DS refuses to do it. DH and I have to hold him (hands/arms/head). It's hysterical crying. We have no choice but to do it.
Please help!

Re: BTDT moms of young ones on the nebulizer
when we had to do this we sat DS on our lap, gave him a toy and did it.
Our Ped, instead of using the mask, put a hole at the end of a styrophome (sp?) cup on the end and just told us to hold it up to his face.

Does he take a pacifier? They do sell an attachment that a pacifier they can suck and it goes through that into his mouth.
Loosk like this
for us, we just held it in front of him while he watched tv etc...

Re: BTDT moms of young ones on the nebulizer
we used a nebulier at least once a day for 6 months out of the year from age 1 to age 3.5 i think.
first, don't use the mask. just put teh regular nebulizer piece on and do a blow by. (i know they say its not as good, but its less of a hassle and they still get the meds)
second put on a good video. turn it up loud. drown out the noise from the machine.
next, if you have to hold him down, its hard on you, but its actually better for them. (the harder they cry, the more they suck the medication deeper into the lungs which is better) i know its hard, but it really is for the best.
try a toy, game, sing songs, watch tv... doesn't matter what you do. anything that will distract him.
and last, the more often its done, eventually they will get used to it and not fight. (or wait until nap time or bed time, if you can, and do it when they are asleep)
i've done pretty much every one of the above options. the best was either when he was sleeping or torturing myself with baby einstein while we watched. plus he got used ot it after a while and didn't fight. but there were those night we had to hold him down to get it done.
and we used it daily 6 months of the year for maintenance. and when he was having asthma flares, it could be as often as every 3 hours around the clock. its not fun.
also, what are you using in the nebulizer? we used xopenex and pulmicort. (I ask because i was once given a treatment of albuterol for asthmatic bronchitis in my doctors office... i was ready to throw up from the aftertaste of the albuterol. the xopenex is much more tolerable when you're stuck breathing it) and its supposed to be better than the albuterol, fewer side effects, but its more expensive for hte copays.

this is cool. i never saw one of these, i wish i had one when he was younger. it would have been perfect. oh well... we've long since passed the pacifier stage with the one who needed the neb.

Re: BTDT moms of young ones on the nebulizer
Thanks Donna for the tip. I may try that.
We used to have a routine with the mask and/or the mouth piece just by his nose.
NO more. He refuses the nebulizer to be even close to him. Not even the mask.
We used to do it during one of his shows. Again, it does not work.
He has bee on the nebulizer for months now. So it's not new. He just does not want to do it anymore.
The minute any part of it approaches him, he gets hysterical.

Re: BTDT moms of young ones on the nebulizer
my son did that for a while too. was ok, then not. i think that may be when i tried to let him use the mouthpiece the right way. he would actually put it in his mouth and breathe ok for it. was a little different, he didn't fight as hard.
good luck. its a phase, he will get past it.

He refuses the mouth piece too.... so we are going nowhere. And I HAVE TO do it every day.
I am not sure where to find the pacifier part but I will look.

Our Ped, instead of using the mask, put a hole at the end of a styrophome (sp?) cup on the end and just told us to hold it up to his face. DS would not wear the mask, we had to get the cone thingy. Also we threw on an Elmo video (or whatever else would occupy him) and let him hold the toy. We would also let him hold fis rubber duck & before we administered the meds, he would hold it to the duck as if he were giving it to the duck. Then the duck would feel "all better" and we would clap for G for helping the duck feel better.

Re: BTDT moms of young ones on the nebulizer
I would always have Alex sit on my lap, facing the TV and would put on a baby einstein movie. SOme days she cried, some days she didn't

Re: BTDT moms of young ones on the nebulizer
I usually have a book out for him to read or DH sits across from him while he is on my lap and makes DS laugh
also, I let him hold it so he feels like he is in control

Re: BTDT moms of young ones on the nebulizer
We used the pacifier piece when he was smaller and then the mask when he was bigger. We had to do it twice a day all winter and he got sick of it. We started singing songs, playing with toys or watching Noggin if all else failed. At the worst point, we were using just the blower piece and no mask and even doing it over him with the blower during his AM nap and then right after he would fall asleep at night (they were doing this to him in the hospital and they said when they are sleeping is the easiest time if they're giving you trouble). THen he got out of the funk and allowed us to use the mask again if we sang songs.

Re: BTDT moms of young ones on the nebulizer
We used to put DS in his high chair and sing silly songs that made him laugh. But, I know how hard it is. One day this would work, one day it wouldn't. The easiest to do was when he was sleeping. I don't know how often you have to do it but if you can push the timing to coincide with a nap or bedtime, that might work.

We have to do it once per day, every day. We used to do it when he was sleeping but the Dr told us that had to give him fluid afterward or he can develop thrush. So that changed everything.
We do it every night in front of his favorite TV show before bed. We have tried the mask (that use to work) then just the mouth piece and now the minute the nebulizer is turned on it's hysterical crying. I don't even have to touch him with the mouth piece. Even "close" to him it's not OK for him.
So frustrating!
