BTDT Moms: When do I buy a breast pump?
Moms - Sorry to be jumping on your board yet again but I have a question about pumping.
When exactly do I buy the breast pump? I will only be home with the baby for 6 weeks and then have to return to work. I plan on pumping as long as I can.
But, being that there is no guarantee that I will even be able to breastfeed him, when do I buy the pump? Is is possible to pump even if there is some reason you can't actually breast feed?
Should I just buy the pump closer to my due date (5 weeks to go) or do I want to have DH purchase it once I know I can breastfeed?
Oh, one more - and if all goes well and can breastfeed, at what point do I start ginving him bottles with breast milk to get him ready for when i return to work?
So confused. TIA!

You could always rent one from the hospital until you are sure you will continue with breastfeeding. It is not recommended to pump until 4 weeks unless you have to so that you can give your supply time to level.

Re: BTDT Moms: When do I buy a breast pump?
Personally, I was glad I purchased it shortly before my induction. BRU will allow you to return an unopened pump within 45 days of purchase. DS ended up in the NICU at 2 days old so I had to start pumping in the hospital. I used the hospital pump while I was there, but once we were discharged, I used my own. I'm glad it was already purchased b/c DH was able to open it and sterilize it before I got home from the hospital.
If you don't need to give bottles right away, I'd wait 4-6 weeks before introducing one.

I bought my pump 2 1/2 weeks PP. I knew at that point I would be EBF. Also it was a good time to get out of the house (severe cabin fever).
You can start giving you DC the bottle at 3 weeks.

This is what I did too. I did get a free handheld pump while I was in the hospital though.
