BTDT Moms- if you had a DC that had to be asleep before you put them to bed...
My DD is a happy baby...but if you put her down when it's time to sleep, forget it! She's miserable and won't let up. She also gets this way if she's left in the swing, car, stroller, etc and she's sleepy. She starts to scream because she just has to be held. She is just about 12 weeks so we're not quite at the 3 month mark yet.
So my question is...if your newborn DC needed to be asleep before you put him/her down, did you end up having to do CIO with them when they were older? Or did they just magically get better and go to sleep on their own? Should I be trying to break these habits now, or is that impossible because it's too early to CIO?
Thanks!

She's too young Tara to CIO and she is still young enough that if she needs to be held to fall asleep then hold her. Emerson would in NO way shape, form, or fashion fall asleep on her own. She needed to fall asleep on us and then you could put her down. Seriously, it's within the past 2 weeks that she has been starting to put herself to sleep for naps and bedtime in her crib so based on my experience..........I wouldn't count on it happening soon per se but of course it's possible. Don't be discouraged if she takes a while to get the hang of putting herself to sleep. Newborns don't have the capacity yet to self soothe so it's hard for them to get to sleep on their own until they master that.

Oh I know we can't CIO yet- and to be honest I'm not a fan of ever having to do that. I just wondered if any infants grow out of that need and end up falling asleep on their own by themselves.

DS always needed to fall asleep on us, with a bottle. Then we'd put him down. We kept doing that until he was about 10 months. (Our decision to go that long because he really was an easy baby.) At 10 months we gave him a crib music thing that he could turn on by himself. He started putting himself to sleep that way. He did that every night (and sometimes in the middle of the night if he woke up) for over a year. Now he is 2 years old and sometimes we still hear the music every once in a while.

Jack always needed to be rocked to sleep. I would hold him/rock him for hours upon hours.
The day he turned 6 months I did CIO.

my dd is the same way, I just started rubbing her belly when I put her down, and sometimes (not all times) it relaxes her enough that she gets back to that sleepy point where she can fall asleep

Shane still needs to be rocked to sleep for naps and the boob to fall asleep at night. He's 7 months. I tried full-on CIO and bailed after 3 days. It was way too hard for me. I'm still trying to get over the post-traumatic stress of it to give Ferber a try.
