Bunk Beds

Mom's with Toddlers/Older Toddlers. What are your thoughts on Bunk Beds? Connor wouldn't go into it right away, but Caiden would. Caiden is 4 now and will be about 4.5 when and if we get them. Connor will get Caidens' Twin Race Car bed until he's big enough. Do you think they're too dangerous and I should wait until Caiden is 5-6 years old? Space wise it's a great idea, but not if they'll get hurt, it's obviously not worth it. Connor is almost 19 months old now and won't go into the Bunk Bed until at least 2, closer to 3 years old. Thanks!

Re: Bunk Beds

I'm getting bunk beds for my boys at some point. My older son is 5 1/2 and the younger one is almost 2. I would get them now except I'm afraid of the younger one climbing the ladder. They say 6 yrs old is youngest you should put a child in an upper bunk and he is close enough to it. Does your older son get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night? If so, do you think he would be comfortable navigating a ladder in the night? Also, where will the 19m old sleep till he goes in the bed? I saw you said a race car bed but will it be in the same room? What I'm afraid of with my 2 year old is if he gets up in the AM before the older one and climbs the ladder. Even if I got a set with a removeable ladder, I can't remove it at night. I'm not sure when I am going to make the change but he (2 yr old) would have be be a bit older for me to be comfortable.

Re: Bunk Beds

That's exactly how I feel right now. Connor is SUCH a climber. I'm surprised he hasn't climbed out of his crib yet. I know it's coming soon though! My older one does get up and comes in our bed in the night and moves around so much. He sleeps in every direction possible. I don't know how, but he does. I'm sure he would love to sleep in a Bunk Bed, but I'm thinking it might be best to wait until Caiden is over 5 and Connor is almost 3. They're so rough with each other right now. It might be more dangerous. They are all boy. Caiden will be going into Kindergarten next August, maybe I'll get them next summer as a Big Boy gift. Thanks! Chat Icon

Re: Bunk Beds

My nephew was 5 when he started sleeping on the top bunk. He fell out and fractured his skull. The AAP recommends bunk beds for six and up.
